Spain 2001: Peugeot 206 new leader in record market above 1.4 million

The Spanish new car market resumes its record run in 2001 with registrations up 3.7% to 1.410.170 units, a new all-time high eclipsing the previous best set in 1999. No surprise atop the brands ranking: Renault (+2.2%) dominates again at 12.6% share ahead of Opel (+13.5%) up 3 spots to #2, Peugeot (+6%) up one to #3, Seat (-6.3%) and Citroen (-1.6%). Below Ford (+8.6%), Volkswagen (+13.7%) makes it 7 carmakers above 100.000 sales this year, a record. Mercedes (+35.8%), Audi (+21.2%) and BMW (+15.9%) post the largest gains in the Top 12. Citroen (-5.9%) remains the #1 LCV brand above Renault (-3.2%) and Nissan (-20.1%).

The models ranking has a brand new leader: the Peugeot 206 (+10.6%) up 3 spots on 2000 and leapfrogging past the Citroen Xsara (-5.6%) and Seat Ibiza (-5.9%). The Ford Focus (+13.8%) is up two spots to #4, overtaking the Opel Astra (+1.6%) and Renault Megane (-14.3%). Note the Top 6 best-sellers are fit within roughly one percentage point of market share. The Opel Corsa (+33.7%) and VW Golf (+27.7%) post the largest gains in the Top 10 while the Renault Scenic (+22.5%) breaks into the Top 10 for the first time and the Citroen Xsara Picasso (+7.5%) is up two to #16. The Peugeot 307 is the best-selling new launch at #21. The Renault Kangoo (+36.7%) reclaims the LCV crown off the Citroen Berlingo (+0.9%) as the Peugeot Partner (+43.8%) leaps onto the podium.
