Mexico 1996: Last win for the VW Beetle in recovering market (+75.9%)
The VW Beetle reclaims the Mexican top spot in Mexico one last time.
After imploding -70.4% in 1995, the Mexican new car market bounces back up 75.9% in 1996 to 301.355 units. Nissan (+40%) holds onto the brands top spot for the 2nd straight year while Volkswagen (+62.4%) catches up but not as fast as Chevrolet (+156.4%), Ford (+136.6%) or Dodge (+82%) which round up the Top 5. Pontiac (+967.9%) and Plymouth (+191.1%) also impress in the Top 10. Model-wise, the VW Beetle (+87%) is back in charge for the first time since 1993, improving its market share to 9.2% and distancing the Nissan Tsuru (-5.3%), Ford F-Series (+119.4%) and Chevrolet Joy/Swing (+1115.6%) up 19 spots to #4. This would end up being the last annual win by the VW Beetle in Mexico. The Nissan Sentra (+1220.6%), Ford Escort (+113.2%) and Dodge Ram (+77.4%) also outpace the market in the Top 10.
