New vehicle sales in India register their very first year-on-year drop since we started following this market in 1985 at -8.7% to 234.263. Brand leader Maruti does a little better at -5%, posting a third consecutive year above 100.000 annual sales and seeing its share improve to 44.7% vs. 43% in 1990. Premier (-13%) and Mahindra (-14%) both fall faster than the market, resulting in shares thawing by almost one percentage point but remain on the podium. Tata soars 29% to hit a best-ever 9.3% share, overtaking Hindustan (-26%) and Force Motors (-13%) in the process.
The Premier NE118 hits record ranking, volume and share in 1991.
The Maruti 800 (-4%) also fares better than its “home” market at -4% to an improved 28.6% share, while the Maruti Omnivan (-5%) overtakes the Premier Padmini (-22%) to end the year at an all-time high 2nd place. The Mahindra Jeep (-10%) stays 4th while the Tata 407/608/609 (+28%) continues its ascent, up one spot to break into the Top 5 for the first time, knocking the Hindustan Ambassador down to #6. In 7th place, the Premier NE118, in fact a rebadged Seat 124 produced locally under license, is up a whopping 25% to reach what would end up being both a record ranking, volume (9.808) and share (4.2%), helping Premier hold onto the #2 brand spot.
