Once again this month’s year-on-year evolution of the Finnish car market is biased by the fact that at the same time last year the market was artificially slowed down as a result of a car tax raise implemented on April 1, 2012. As a results sales are up a huge 148% in April to a somewhat mundane 9,706 registrations, with the year-to-date total still significantly down at -28% to 37,091 units. If last month the Nissan Qashqai showed the VW Golf who was Boss by leading the market by far, this time the reverse happens: the VW Golf is way ahead with 490 sales and 5% and reclaims the year-to-date leadership at 1,798 units and 4.8% while the Qashqai falls back to #4 this month and #2 year-to-date.
Other great performers in Finland in April include the Toyota Yaris up 5 ranks to #3, the BMW 3 Series up 4 to #6 and now #10 so far in 2013 vs. #20 in 2012, the Hyundai i20 up 7 to #11, the Mercedes A-Class up 5 to #18 and the Skoda Rapid maintaining itself within the Finnish Top 20 for the 2nd month in a row at #19.

This month’s new car sales figures in Finland are a little biased by the fact that in March 2012 the market was artificially boosted in anticipation of a car tax raise. As a result March 2013 is down an abysmal 59% year-on-year to 9,492 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 27,640 units, down an equally embarrassing 42% on 2012. If last month the VW Golf snapped up the pole position thanks to the 7th generation now in full swing, in March the Nissan Qashqai tells the Golf who’s Boss: with 523 sales and 5.5% it is nearly 1.5 percentage point above the Golf and reclaims the year-to-date lead thanks to 1,384 units and 5% vs. 1,308 and 4.7% for the Golf.
Skoda Rapid
The Toyota Avensis is nicely back on the podium at #3, the Toyota Auris lodges another very solid month at #4 with 3.7% share while the Honda CR-V confirms it has Top 10 potential over the Full Year 2012: #6 this month and year-to-date vs. #25 in 2012. Notice also the BMW 3 Series up 10 spots on February to #10, the Skoda Rapid making its very first appearance in the Finnish Top 30 at #16 and the Mercedes A-Class at #23.

Still a depressing climate for new car sales in Finland, down 26% year-on-year in February to 7,816 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 17,992 units, down 27% on 2012. After 7 consecutive months of Nissan Qashqai reign, the VW Golf takes advantage of its new generation to regain the top spot for the first time since last June and only the third time in the last 12 months with 449 sales and 5.7% share, also taking the lead year-to-date at 914 units and 5.1%. The Qashqai is down to #2 with 375 sales and 4.8% while the Toyota Auris is up a whopping 13 spots on January to land in third position at 278 units and 3.6%.
Honda CR-V
The new generation Honda CR-V has definitely struck a chord with Finnish consumers: it is up 3 ranks on last month to reach an outstanding 4th place thanks to 258 sales and 3.3% vs. #25 over the Full Year 2012. Notice also the Mazda6 back within the Finnish Top 30 for the first time in almost a year thanks to the new model, up to a fantastic 12th place at 150 units and 1.9%, the Hyundai i40 up to #19 and the Opel Mokka down 11 to #29.

The VW Golf (4.6%), Toyota Avensis (4.3%) and Ford Focus (3%) follow while the Volvo V40 breaks into the Finnish monthly Top 5 for the very first time at #5 with 278 units and 2.7%.
Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V takes advantage of the new generation to jump up to a fantastic 7th place with 269 sales and 2.6% vs. #25 and 1.1% in the Full Year 2012 and the BMW 3 Series continues its impressive progression, up a further 3 spots on December to #8 at 259 units and 2.5% vs. #30 and 1% in FY2012. Thanks to Rene and STAC I can now share with you more detailed Historical Data for Finland for as far back as 40 years ago! Back then, the Fiat 600 dominates the models ranking followed by the Opel Kadett and… the Toyota Corolla with Finland being one of its first successful forays into European markets.
The Lada 2105 was the best-seller in Finland in 1981
Russian brands have been very popular with Finnish consumers: the Moskvitsh Elite ranks #6 in 1971 and the Lada 2105 is #1 in 1981, #3 in 1991 and still in the Top 10 in 1993.
Toyota Corolla
From 1991 onwards and for nearly 20 years the title of most popular model in Finland is a fight between the Toyota Corolla, #1 in 1991, 1993, 1998 and from 2002 to 2007, and the Opel Astra, leader in 1994, 1996 and 2001 - I don’t have data for 1992, 95, 97, 99 and 2000 – if you do please get in touch! In 2008 the VW Golf takes the relay for 3 years before passing it to the Skoda Octavia in 2011. Finally in 2012 the Nissan Qashqai takes the lead for the first time.

The new car market in Finland is now stuck in recession: down 21% year-on-year in September to just 7,897 registrations, which brings the year-to-date total to 87,726 units, down 11% on 2011. And this month we welcome a very interesting development in Finland: #1 for the third month in a row and the 4th time ever after last January, July and August, the Nissan Qashqai beats its monthly market share record in the country by far: from 5.1% in January to 6.5% in September thanks to 517 sales. This means the Qashqai now leads the Finnish 2012 year-to-date models ranking with 3,954 units and 4.5%. If in 2011 it was #1 in Lithuania, this year Finland is the only country in the world where the Qashqai is #1 year-to-date…
The VW Golf stays solid at #2 with 4.3% but ranks 4th year-to-date at 3.7%. It is followed in August by the Skoda Octavia and Ford Focus, both up one spot on last month while the VW Passat is up 5 to #5 and the Hyundai i30 is up an impressive 12 ranks to #6 with 203 sales and 2.6% share vs. #23 and 1.2% year-to-date. Other great performers include the Kia Cee’d up 6 to #9 and the Volvo V60 up 8 to #21.
