For the first time since 2010 and the 4th time overall after 2008-2010, the VW Golf is the most popular car in Finland this year. The 7th generation of the model has clearly struck a chord with Finnish consumers, with Volkswgaen’s legendary nameplate up 20% on 2012 to 5,063 sales and 5% share. The fight with the new generation Skoda Octavia was intense however, with the Czech sedan topping the monthly sales charts 5 times in the last 7 months of the year and finishing at #2 with 4,779 units and 4.7%, up 5% on 2012. Surprise leader last year, the Nissan Qashqai is down 18% to #3 but the new model, just launched, should reverse the trend in 2014.

BMW 3 Series Finland 2013The BMW 3 Series is among the 10 most popular cars in Finland in 2013.

The other great performer in the Finnish Top 10 in 2013 is the Toyota Auris thanks to the new model with its attractive hybrid and station wagon variants: it is up 94% and 8 ranks on last year to land at #4 with 3,274 sales and 3.2%, meaning both its big and small sisters suffer: the Avensis is down 27% to #5 and the Yaris down 19% to #6. Third superstar of the Top 10: the BMW 3 Series up a fantastic 111% and 21 spots to land in 9th position at 2,248 units and 2.2%. Notice also the Volvo V40 up 183% to #12 for its first full year of sales, the Honda CR-V up 29% and 10 ranks to #15, Audi A3 up 67% to #16, Mercedes A-Class up 126% to #28 and the Mazda6 up 50% to #30.

New car sales in Finland finish the year on a paltry -11% in December at 5,685 registrations, which brings the year-to-date total to 102,064 units, down 7% on 2012. Just as I described the lukewarm performance of the Volvo V40 at home in Sweden, it climbs onto the Finnish podium for the first time ever, beating its previous best of #5 reached last January and September. It does look like Sweden is one of the least adequate markets for the V40 after all! In the meantime, the VW Golf reclaims its traditional pole position this month thanks to an excellent 381 sales and 6.7% vs. 5% in 2013, ahead of the Skoda Octavia at 347 units and 6.1% vs. 4.7% this year. Other great performers in Finland this month include the BMW 3 Series up 11 spots on November to a splendid 5th place, the Kia Cee’d up 3 ranks to #6 vs. #11 over the Full Year, Kia Rio up 21 to #7 vs. #14 and Audi A3 up 5 to #8 vs. 16 in 2013.

New car sales in Finland are down 3% year-on-year in November to 7,390 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 96,379 units, down 7% on 2012. The Skoda Octavia tops Finnish sales for the 5th time in the last 6 months with a splendid 7.2% market share and 532 sales. However this is still not enough to topple the VW Golf from its pedestal, as the German compact also lodges an excellent month at 464 units and 6.3%, adding up to 4,682 sales and 4.9% year-to-date vs. 4,432 and 4.6% for the Octavia. This performance enables Volkswagen to reclaim the #1 brand spot over Toyota year-to-date at 11,861 sales vs. 11,831. Other great performers this month include the Ford Fiesta up to #5, Volvo V40 up to #7, Ford Mondeo up to #11, Audi A3 up to #13 and the Mercedes A-Class up to #15.

Full October data is starting to drip through and Finland is the first cab off the rank this month. New car sales in Finland are up a very satisfying 11% year-on-year in October to 8,985 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 88,989 units, now down just 7% on 2012. The Skoda Octavia is the best-selling model in the country for the 4th time in the last 5 months thanks to 611 sales and an excellent 6.8% share, and gains one spot year-to-date to now rank #2 at 3,900 units and 4.4%, behind only the VW Golf at 4,218 sales and 4.7%. There is still a slim possibility the Octavia could take the overall lead by the time 2013 comes to an end but it will be a challenge as the Golf is still selling very well, #2 this month at 521 units and 5.8%.

Volvo V60 Finland October 2013Volvo V60

The Toyota Auris also shines, up one spot on September to land on the podium with 482 sales and 5.4%, it also gains one rank year-to-date, passing its big brother the Avensis to become Toyota’s best-seller so far in 2013 at #4 with 2,924 units and 3.3%. In the process Toyota reclaims the title of best-selling manufacturer so far in 2013 from Volkswagen. In Spite of a strong 4.8% market share this month, the Nissan Qashqai is down to #4 and slips to #3 year-to-date at 4.3%. Volvo displays excellent health in Finland: it places the V40 at #8 vs. #12 year-to-date, the V60 at #11 vs. #22, the V70 at #14 vs. #19 and the XC60 at #19 vs. #26.
