Finland July 2017: Skoda Octavia leads, Toyota up 55%

In July the Finnish new car market is up 5.8% year-on-year to 8.705 registrations, yet the year-to-date tally remains in negative territory at -0.9% to 72.308 units. Toyota shoots up a spectacular 55% on July 2016 to 13.3% share, distancing Volkswagen at 11.2% (+12%) and Skoda at 9.1% (-4%). In the remainder of the Top 10, Volvo (+25%), Kia (+21%) and Mercedes (+28%) shine but Ford (-18%), Opel (-21%) and Nissan (-39%) struggle. Further down, notice Peugeot (+29%), Seat (+35%), Mini (+39%), Suzuki (+46%), Lexus (+50%), Dacia (+80%), Land Rover (+92%), Porsche (+467%) and Alfa Romeo (+525%) all posting spectacular gains. Model-wise, the Skoda Octavia (+3%) continues to lead the way and is followed this time by three fast-advancing nameplates: the VW Golf (+63%), Toyota Yaris (+61%) and Auris (+32%). The Kia Rio (+27%) and Toyota Avensis (+29%) also post robust improvements whereas the Ford Focus (-20%), Nissan Qashqai (-27%) and Opel Astra (-42%) implode. The Volvo V90 slips out of the Top 10 (#13), the Volvo XC60 is up 10 spots on June two #14, the Toyota RAV4 up 38% to #16 and the BMW 3 Series up 66% to #22.

Finland June 2017: Skoda Octavia leads, Toyota Auris up to #2

The Finnish new car market edges up 0.6% in June to 10.651 units, yet the year-to-date total remains in negative territory at -1.7% to 65.598 deliveries. The Top three best-selling carmakers frankly beat the market: Toyota soars 14% to 13.5% share ahead of Volkswagen up 8% to 13.3% and Skoda up 25% to 11.1%, one full percentage point above its YTD level. Below Ford in difficulty at -6%, Volvo (+44%) and Mercedes (+23%) impress. Further down, Hyundai (+16%), Suzuki (+32%), Mini (+36%), Land Rover (+36%) and Tesla (+208%) shine. In contrast, Renault (-12%), Nissan (-14%), Opel (-17%), Seat (-17%), Mitsubishi (-27%), Dacia (-28%), Subaru (-29%), Peugeot (-36%), Citroen (-55%) and Honda (-72%) are in great difficulty. The Skoda Octavia (+10%) remains the most popular nameplate in Finland, with the Toyota Auris (+21%) bypassing the VW Golf (-6%) and Nissan Qashqai (-5%) to rank 2nd this month. The VW Polo shoots up 77% to #5, the Volvo V90 is down one spot to #9, the Kia Rio is up 12% to #13, the Toyota C-HR is stable at a splendid 14th place, the Mercedes E-Class is up 66% to #15, the BMW 5 Series up 29% to #16 and the Audi A3 up 45% to #22.

Finland May 2017: Volvo up 49% in market up 4.8%

The Finnish new car market is up 4.8% year-on-year in May to 10.841 registrations, yet the year-to-date tally remains in negative at -2.2% to 52.940 units. Brand leaders Toyota (+21%) and Volkswagen (+19%) both frankly outpace the market, while Skoda drops 1% but is back on the podium. Volvo (+49%), BMW (+50%) and Mercedes (+33%) deliver the largest year-on-year gains inside the Top 10, with Renault (+15%) and Hyundai (+21%) also dynamic just below. The Skoda Octavia remains the most popular nameplate in the country despite dropping 10% year-on-year this month. The VW Golf (+5%) is up two spots on April to #2, ahead of the Nissan Qashqai (+17%) and Toyota Auris (+35%). The VW Passat (+5 spots on last month to #6), Polo (+5 to #7), Renault Clio (#9) and BMW 5 Series (#13) also make themselves noticed while the Volvo V90 (#8) and Toyota C-HR (#14) recede somewhat.

Finland April 2017: Volvo V90 on podium, Toyota C-HR in Top 10

The Finnish new car market is down a harsh 16% year-on-year in April to 9.252 registrations. meaning the year-to-date tally is now in negative as well at -3.9% to 42.093 units. Toyota continues to dominate the brands ranking, going completely against the grain with deliveries up a fantastic 19% to 1.204. Volkswagen (-9%) follows, losing less ground than the market, while Volvo shoots up 30% to third place overall, distancing Skoda (-32%), Ford (-24%) and Kia (-35%) all in freefall. Mercedes (+4%), Renault (+37%), Peugeot (+15%) and Dacia (+64%) are among the rare marques registering a year-on-year gain.

Model-wise, the Skoda Octavia reclaims the top spot off the Nissan Qashqai while the Volvo V90 gains four spots to land onto the Finnish podium for the first time. The VW Golf surges back up from #20 last month to #4 in April, distancing the Toyota Avensis, Opel Astra and Toyota Yaris just as the Toyota C-HR gains six ranks on March to break into the Finnish Top 10 for the first time at #8. Notice also the Volvo S90 up five to #20.

Finland March 2017: Nissan Qashqai up 41% to snap top spot

The Nissan Qashqai is the best-selling vehicle in Finland this month.

New car sales in Finland are down 3.6% year-on-year in March to 11.093 registrations, leaving a Q1 result up just 0.1% to 32.835 units. Toyota keeps the lead of the brands ranking, even improving 4% to 1.472 units and 13.3%. It is followed this month by Nissan – fuelling up on sales just as the Japanese Financial Year ends – up 6 spots on February but down 2% year-on-year to 1.060 sales. Skoda is stable in third place, ahead of Volkswagen struggling at -17% and Volvo up a splendid 19%. Other great gainers this month include Hyundai (+43%), Peugeot (+17%), Seat (+34%), Dacia (+86%) and Lexus (+178%).

Model-wise, the Nissan Qashqai surges 41% year-on-year to take the overall lead, knocking the year-to-date leader, the Skoda Octavia (-3%), down to #2. The Toyota Auris (-5%), Yaris (-24%) and Avensis (-24%) all struggle while the Volvo V90 gains another two spots on February to rank at a stunning 7th place. Inside the Top 10, notice also the Kia Rio up 23% to #9 and the Volvo XC60 up 87% to #10. Beyond, the VW Polo (+44%), Skoda Fabia (+36%), Opel Mokka (+85%), VW Tiguan (+440% thanks to the new generation), Mercedes E-Class (+110%) and Toyota RAV4 (+129%) all shine. Among other recent launches, the Toyota C-HR climbs up six spots on February to #14 and the Volvo S90 remains at #25.

Finland February 2017: Toyota reigns supreme, Volvo V90 in Top 10

The Volvo V90 breaks into the Finnish Top 10 for the first time.

The Finnish new passenger car market is down 5% year-on-year in February to 9.084 registrations, yet a strong January score keeps the year-to-date total in positive at +2% to 21.739. Market leader Toyota posts the largest year-on-year increase in the Top 20 at +37% to hit 1.355 sales and 14.9% share, widening the gap with #2 Skoda (+8%) and #3 Volkswagen (-8%) which led the Full Year 2016 rankings. Year-to-date, Toyota is up 30% to 13.2% share vs. +12% and 11.4% share for Skoda and -2% and 11% share for Volkswagen. Most carmakers in the Top 20 are in negative territory, with Opel (+6%), Mercedes (+5%) and Mazda (+7%) some of the exceptions. Among smaller brands, Mini (+45%), Porsche (+50%), Lexus (+67%) and Jaguar (+133%) shine.

In the midst of a changeover with the facelifted model, the Skoda Octavia shines with sales up 30% to 577 sales and 4.6% share, frankly outpacing the Toyota Auris (+27%), Nissan Qashqai (-2%), Toyota Yaris (+14%) and Avensis (+12%), making it three Toyotas in the Top 5. The Volvo V90 breaks into the Finnish Top 10 for the first time since the nameplate was relaunched last year, the Skoda Fabia is up 101% to #10, the VW Tiguan up 284% to #13 thanks to the new model, the Mercedes E-Class is up 197%, the Volvo XC60 up 49% and the Opel Mokka up 48%.

Finland January 2017: VW Tiguan, Volvo V90 and S90 impress

The Volvo V90 ranks 11th overall in Finland this month.

Finnish new car sales are up 8% year-on-year in January to 12.653 registrations and it’s a great start of the year for Toyota, up 24% to overtake 2016 leader Volkswagen (+3%) and snap up the top spot at 11.9% share. Skoda (+15%) and Volvo (+23%) shine inside the Top 5 with Mercedes (+18%), BMW (+20%), Nissan (+20%) and Kia (+35%) also impressive. Further down, Suzuki (+39%), Lexus (+43%) and Tesla (+160%) stand out. In the models aisle, the Skoda Octavia (+53%) and Nissan Qashqai (+40%), last year’s top two best-sellers, start the year all guns blazing followed by the Opel Astra (+29%) and VW Golf (+14%). The VW Tiguan shoots up 7-fold on January 2016 to break into the Top 10 vs. #43 over the Full Year 2016, but the most impressive entrances inside this month’s Finnish Top 30 are the Volvo V90 at #11 and the Volvo S90 at #29, adding up to 384 combined sales. Notice also the Toyota C-HR landing at #25, a ranking that should improve drastically over the coming months.

New car sales in Finland are up a solid 9.3% year-on-year in 2016 to 117.821 registrations, and like last year the Top two most popular carmaker fall just short of the market growth, resulting in lower market shares: Volkswagen is up just 3% to 11.2% and Toyota is up 6% to 19.8% while Skoda follows the market at +9% to remain at 9.2% share. Kia (+10%), Ford (+11%), Audi (+13%), Mercedes (+14%), Opel (+30%) and Renault (+49%) are the most impressive gainers in a Top 12 unchanged on 2015. Further down, Mazda (+21%), Seat (+36%), Honda (+48%), Suzuki (+58%) and Jaguar (+152%) impress. In the models ranking, the Skoda Octavia posts a third consecutive year atop the Finnish charts despite sales down 5% to 5.531. It is the fourth time in total that the Octavia leads annual sales in Finland (add 2011).

The podium is unchanged on 2015, with the Nissan Qashqai (+8%) and VW Golf (+9%) evolving like the market, followed by the Toyota Auris (+9%) up one spot to #4. Excellent first full year of sales for the new generation Opel Astra up 180% and 19 ranks on its 2015 score to land in 5th place. The Ford Focus (+40%), Audi A4 (+93%) and Skoda Superb (+118%) also impress in the Top 15, while further down the Seat Leon (+56%), Renault Kadjar (+227%), Honda HR-V (+648%), Suzuki Vitara (+130%) and VW Tiguan (+121%) make their mark. The Volvo V90 (#77) is the most popular newcomer ahead of the Volvo S90 (#92), Kia Niro (#107), Renault Talisman (#114), Seat Ateca (#130) and Ford Ecosport (#135).

The Finnish new car market posts another stable month with November sales up just 0.1% year-on-year to 8.966, yet the year-to-date tally remains up by a large margin at +10% to 109.696. Despite sales down 1% on October 2015, Toyota reclaims the brands pole position off Volkswagen (+6%) this month but remains #2 year-to-date. Ford (-5%) and Skoda (-13%) struggle but Nissan (+12%), Renault (+48%), Audi (+38%), BMW (+22%), Dacia (+92%) and Seat (+27%) impress. Further down, notice also Suzuki (+98%), Jaguar (+150%), Lexus (+180%) and Porsche (+120%). The November models ranking is a photo finish: only 3 sales separate the Skoda Octavia (+13%), Nissan Qashqai (+34%) and Toyota Auris (+8%)! The Ford Focus (+54%), VW Golf (+47%), Opel Astra (+139%) and Audi A4 (+294%) also make themselves noticed, all within the Top 15, and although it drops 10% year-on-year, the Renault Clio ranks far above its YTD level this month at #10 vs. #25.

Finland October 2016: Volkswagen up 24%, Golf up 96% in stable market

The Finnish new car market is up by just 22 units year-on-year in October (or 0.2%) to 9.104 registrations, leading to a year-to-date tally up 11% to 100.723. Thanks to sales soaring 24% on October 2015, Volkswagen reclaims the brands pole position off Toyota at 1.113 units vs. 985 (-24%) for the Japanese manufacturer. Skoda (-14%) rounds up the podium, distancing Kia (+23%), Volvo (+5%) and Ford (-11%). Renault almost doubles its sales year-on-year at +97% to #8, Honda is up 38% to #13, Seat up 104% to #16, Suzuki up 29% to #19 and Porsche up 100% to #26. The VW Golf surges up 96% to lead the models ranking with 4.9% share, ahead of the Nissan Qashqai at 4.6% (+6%), the Skoda Octavia at 4.5% (-11%) – still by far #1 year-to-date – Toyota Yaris (-16%) and Auris (-39%). The Opel Astra gains 39% year-on-year but drops 3 spots on September to #6, the Audi A3 is up 46% to #10, the Skoda Superb up 116% to #18, Audi A4 up 54% to #19, Seat Leon up 189% to #20 and the Toyota RAV4 lands at #21 and #29 year-to-date.
