Switzerland January-February 2016: Skoda Octavia #1, VW T6 shines

Today we update two months at once for Switzerland. In January, the Swiss new car market is up 10% year-on-year to 20.205 registrations, but Volkswagen drops 8% to 2.363 sales and 11.7%. It is followed by Mercedes (+36%), BMW (+11%) and Skoda (+40%) with Renault rounding up the Top 5 (+16%). Audi is up 9% but drop from #2 in December to #6 this month. Notice also Hyundai up 51%, Volvo up 50%, Fiat up 48%, Suzuki up 41% and Honda up 111%. The Skoda Octavia brilliantly takes control of the models ranking with 833 sales and 4.1% share vs. 707 and 3.5% for the VW Golf. The Mercedes C-Class jumps to #3, the Renault Clio is up to #5, the VW T6 (new generation Transporter) surges up to #6, the BMW X3 is up to #9, the Hyundai Tucson up to #13, the Mercedes GLC up to #15, Suzuki Vitara up to #17, Mercedes GLE up to #20, Volvo XC90 leaps to #30 and the Tesla Model S is inside the Top 50, confirming the posh tastes of the Swiss customer.

In February, Swiss new car sales drastically slow down their growth at +1% to 22.653 units, bringing the year-to-date total to 42.858 sales, up 5% on the same period in 2015. This time Volkswagen beats the market at +8% and sees its two-month total almost match last year’s at 5.128 sales vs. 5.136 for a 12% share. BMW is up 12% to climb #2 overall, Skoda is down 12% at #3, Mercedes down 8% at #4 but Renault gains 26% in 5th position. Ford (+20%), Land Rover (+54%) and Smart (+54%) also shine. The VW Golf reclaims the #1 spot off the Skoda Octavia for just two units but remains #2 year-to-date, the VW T6 improves further to #4 overall and the VAG Group monopolies the Top 5 with the Polo (#3) and Passat (#5). The BMW X1 replaces the X3 inside the Swiss Top 10 (#10), the Hyundai Tucson is up two spots on January to #11 and the Land Rover Discovery Sport up a gigantic 80 ranks to #15.
