Nigeria Full Year 2014: Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Accent on top

The Nigerian new car market is up 8% year-on-year in 2014 to 53.900 registrations, still a minuscule figure given its population of 175 million inhabitants. For the first time on BSCB I can share with you official models data for Nigeria as described further down. Toyota remains by far the most popular carmaker in the country despite sales down 14% to 15.802 for a 29.3% market share, and is followed like in 2013 by the two main Korean manufacturers, albeit in a different order: Hyundai shoots up 72% to 2nd place overall with 12.4% share whereas Kia is down 26% to 4.745. Nissan is up 29% and two spots to #4, Ford down 2% and one rank to #5 and Mitsubishi down 30% to #6. Notice also Volkswagen up 238% to #8, Chevrolet up 917% to #9, Skoda landing at #10, Peugeot at #12, Dacia at #13 and Tata down 72% to #15.

Over on the model sales charts, we discover for the first time that the Toyota Corolla is the best-selling vehicle in Nigeria with a strong 7.8% share, followed relatively closely by the Hyundai Accent at 6.7% and the Toyota Hiace at 6.6%. King of 27 African countries, the Toyota Hilux recedes to #4 in Nigeria at 4.6% share. Toyota places four nameplates in the Nigerian Top 5 with the Camry at #5, and seven in the Top 10, adding the Avensis and Prado. Hyundai for its part places the Elantra at #6 and the Santa Fe at #15 and Kia has the Rio at #10, then the Cerato, Sportage, Optima and Picanto all inside the Top 20. Other noticeable appearances include the Dacia Logan at #18, Mercedes Sprinter at #20, Nissan Murano at #22, Peugeot 301 at #23, VW Touareg at #27 and Toyota 4Runner at #29.
