Nissan USA reported yesterday that the four-millionth Altima has been sold, 20 years after the first unit rolled off the line at the Nissan Smyrna Vehicle Assembly plant in 1992. Simultaneously, the Altima also broke its 2007 record of 284,762 units sold, with 2012 its best year ever in the US. This was helped by the 2013 model which has been on sale since last August and is manufactured in two separate US plants: Smyrna, Tennessee and Canton, Mississippi, which employ about 12,000 workers.

Nissan says that conquest sales figures show that nearly 25% of 2013 Altima buyers are former Toyota or Honda owners, and almost 12% traded a premium brand for an Altima. Autoblig says the strong Altima sales have helped Nissan’s fortunes as a whole, too, with the carmaker’s sales up by nearly 10% year-on-year in November.
