Over the first 3 months of 2012, the Chilean new car market is down 6% year-on-year to 102,773 registrations, and today I can share with you a very rare Top 10 models ranking for this country. While in 2010 and potentially in 2011 the Hyundai Accent was the king of the roads in Chile, so far in 2012 it is the Chevrolet Sail, imported from China, that has taken control of the models ranking with 3,007 sales and 2.9% share.

Hyundai Accent

This means the Hyundai Accent is kicked down to #2 at 2,833 units and 2.8%, with the Kia Rio brilliantly rounding up the podium thanks to 2,616 sales for a 2.5% market share. Once in the Top 2 most popular models in Chile, the Nissan Tiida is down to #4 with 2% of the market, followed by the Chevrolet Spark, Toyota Yaris and Spark GT. Notice the Samsung SM3 at #9.

Thanks to ANAC and es.autoblog.com I have more recent brands information for Chile: over the first 7 months of 2012 the market is down 2% to 183,738 registrations, and in the passenger car segment Chevrolet is in the lead by far with 27,830 sales, followed by Hyundai at 17,444 and Kia at 14,897.

Chery Destiny (aka Rely V5)

The interesting part in this ranking is seeing Chinese manufacturers climbing up the ladder little by little: Chery is #11 with 2,843 units sold – above Volkswagen!, ahead of Great Wall at #13 and 2,644 sales – above Peugeot, JAC at #17 with 1,729 – above Renault, BYD at #19 -above Mercedes, BMW and Honda, Geely at #24, Lifan at #30, MG at #31, Haima at #33, Zotye at #34 and Brilliance at #37. In the overall market brands ranking including commercial vehicles and 4wds, Great Wall leads the Chinese charge at #11.
