Spain June 2011: Seat Leon #1 for the first time! UPDATED

Seat Leon

* Now updated with the Top 200 best-selling models, thanks to Ausrutherford! *

Spanish car sales are stuck in hell: -31% year-on-year in May at 83,385 registrations and -27% in 2011 year-to-date at 442,217 units. Seat has tried to counter the trend by launching its own scrappage scheme: the Seat-Plan E, offering 1,200 € if you let go of a car of more than 8 years or 160,000km when you buy a new Seat plus 10,000 € financing at 0% interest for 48 months.

On top of this, Seat offered savings of up to 5,500 € on the Seat Leon, bringing the model’s base price down to 13,400 €. This was enough to propel the Seat Leon on top of the Spanish model ranking this month for the very first time in the nameplate’s 12 year career!

With 3,160 sales and 3.8% share in May, the Leon is only the second Seat model after the Ibiza to hold the pole position in its native country. The Opel Corsa is getting stronger and stronger in 2nd place with 3.7% of the Spanish market, followed by the Ford Focus, also very solid at 3.6%.

The Seat Ibiza is down to a very unusual 4th place and 3.2% but keeps the lead year-to-date with 17,491 sales and 3.9% share, ahead of the Nissan Qashqai, 5th in May, and the Opel Corsa. The VW Polo (#6), Citroen C4 (#8) and Renault Clio (#10) all have a very good month as well.

Chevrolet Aveo

Two models make their first appearance in the Spanish ranking: the Citroen DS4 in 80th position with 242 sales and the Chevrolet Nuevo Aveo at #83 with 235 sales. Notice the Porsche Cayenne at #108 with 153 sales, 8 times the amount of the 2nd best-selling Porsche in the country, the Panamera (19 units)…
