Portugal September 2026: Tesla hits record volume and share, Omoda 5 in Top 10

The Tesla Model 3 holds a record 10.5% of the Portuguese market in September.

Portuguese new car sales shoot up 15.2% year-on-year in September to 19,589 units. This brings the year-to-date tally up 10.1% to 188,912. And here we have another country where Tesla (+128.3%) lodges an outstanding month, up to pole position with a record 2,749 sales and 14% share which is almost double any other carmaker in the country. Its previous best were 1,883 sales in June 2026 and 11.2% share in November 2023 when it also led the market outright. Mercedes (+7.2%) drops to #2 ahead of Peugeot (-18.6%) in great difficulty but still #1 year-to-date. Volvo (+28.9%) is in great shape at #10 vs. #16 year-to-date, with Toyota (+16.2%) also beating the market and Volkswagen (+13.2%) solid. Below, Cupra (+108.6%), newcomer Omoda (#19 with 1.8% share), Leapmotor (+1224%), Xpeng (+136.3%) and Changan Deepal (+650%) stand out.

Model-wise, Tesla manages its second ever 1-2, exactly one year after the first. Like in September 2025, the Tesla Model 3 (+221.7%) is in the lead with record volumes (2,065) and share (10.5%) followed by the Model Y (+21.7%). The Dacia Duster (+10.3%) and Sandero (-24.6%) are the best of the rest, far, far away at 2.2% and 2% share respectively. The Peugeot 2008 (-28.7%) is also in trouble at #5 but holds onto the YTD top spot. The Peugeot 208 (+28.2%) and Citroen C3 (+21.1%) post very solid results while the Volvo EX30 (+149.6%) is up to #9, its best ranking since August 2024 (#8). The Omoda 5 is the best-selling recent launch and breaks into the Top 10 for the first time at #10.
