Ireland September 2026: Tesla Model Y and MG 4 dominate in strong market (+13%)

The MG 4 soars to 2nd place in Ireland in September.

The Irish new car market gains 13% year-on-year in September to 6,336 units, leading to a year-to-date volume up 5.4% to 128,282. Tesla (+105.2%) more than doubles its sales year-on-year and surges 12 spots on August to grab the brands top spot with 14.9% share. It is the second time after June that Tesla is the most popular carmaker in the country. It always happens in slow months though, and as a result the American brand ranks #14 year-to-date, as it did over the Full Year 2025. Toyota (+6.2%) drops to #2 but holds onto the YTD pole position with 13.8% share. Volkswagen (-14.5%) and Skoda (-2.7%) exchange positions to #3 and #4 respectively. MG (+388%) surges to #6 and 6.4% share vs. #17 and 2.2% so far this year. Citroen (+80.6%), Suzuki (+60.9%) and Cupra (+52.2%) also shine below.

Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (+242.9%) takes the lead for the first time in three years (since September 2023) with 11.7% share, but remains at a paltry #14 year-to-date, albeit vs. #27 over the Full Year 2025. The MG 4 (+996.3%) skyrockets to 2nd place with 4.7% share vs. #121 last month and #54 with 0.6% share so far this year. The Toyota RAV4 (+588.2%) surfs on the success of its new generation and ranks #3, followed by the VW ID.4 (+42.1%) and Tesla Model 3 (-17.7%). Other great performers include the Toyota Yaris Cross (+158.7%) holding onto its YTD leadership and the Hyundai Inster (+129.3%) up 36 ranks on August to #7.
