Malaysia August 2026: Proton (+37.7%) places e.MAS 5 at #5 and S70 at #7

The Proton S70 sees its sales surge 167.4% year-on-year.

The Malaysian new light vehicle market edges down -1.5% year-on-year in August to 77,276 units, however the year-to-date tally remains in positive at +3.5% to 566,616. Perodua (-8.1%) is in difficulty but delivers a satisfying 38.1% share vs. 38.7% so far this year. Meanwhile Proton (+37.7%) is on a roll at 26.1% of its home market vs. 23.9% year-to-date. It’s worth noting that these two local brands account for a stunning 64.2% of the market. Below, Toyota (-9.6%), Honda (-28.9%) and Omoda Jaecoo (-3.3%) all struggle but Jetour (+232.2%) and Tesla (+129.1%) shoot up to land at #6 and #7 respectively. This is Jetour’s highest ever ranking in Malaysia.

Model-wise, the Perodua Bezza (-11.7%) keeps the lead despite a steep year-on-year fall to 10.9% share vs. 11.6% year-to-date. The Perudua Axia (+7.4%) reclaims the 2nd place off the Proton Saga (+20.9%) still evolving at markedly higher levels than a year ago. The Perodua Myvi (-25.1%) stays in 4th position while the new Proton e.MAS 5 (aka Geely EX2/Xingyuan) breaks into the monthly Top 5 for the first time at #5. The Perodua Alza (-25%) is toppled to #5 ahead of another shining Proton: the S70 (aka Geely Emgrand) skyrockets up 167.4% year-on-year thanks to its refresh to land at #7. The next five models all fall by double-digits, with the Proton X50 (-46.1%) the hardest hit.
