Japan First Half 2026: Honda N-BOX only model above 100,000 sales

The Honda N-BOX is the most popular model in Japan.

New vehicle sales in Japan edge up 1.8% year-on-year over the First Half of 2026 to 2,387,189 units. Toyota (+5.4%) progresses from 30.9% share in 2025 to 32% this year, leaving Suzuki (-1.4%) in the dust. Honda (+0.3%) is stable while Daihatsu (+7.1%) continues to recover at #4 and improves its share to 11.8%. Mitsubishi (+9.5%) also beats the market at #7, Isuzu (+0.2%) is stable but Subaru (-10.8%), Lexus (-6.9%), Mazda (-6.1%) and Nissan (-1.5%) are in trouble. Among foreigners, Mercedes (-7.8%) keeps the lead at #11 but skids. Followers BMW (-17.2%), Volkswagen (-21.3%), Audi (-10.3%) and Mini (-8.7%) all deliver poor results. BYD is up 39.7% to #24 but only has 0.1% share.

The Toyota Yaris/Cross (-16.9%) keeps the lead of the regular car ranking despite a harsh -16.9% YoY fall. The Toyota Sienta (+10.4%) overtakes the Toyota Corolla/Cross (-16.3%) for 2nd place while the Toyota Raize (+28.3%) and Roomy (+16.6%) leapfrog past the Honda Freed (-1.6%) to land at #4 and #5 respectively. Excellent scores also by the Toyota Voxy (+18.3%) and Honda Vezel (+16.8%). Below, the Toyota RAV4 (+116.1%) enjoys the benefits of its new generation, with the Suzuki Jimny Wagon (+60.7%) and Toyota Land Cruiser (+33.5%) also standing out.

Looking at kei cars, the Honda N-BOX (-1%) stays on top and becomes the only vehicle in the country passing the 100,000 sales mark over the period and despite a small YoY drop. The Suzuki Spacia (-1.3%) evolves similarly and keeps its 2nd spot. The Daihatsu Move (+24.4%) delivers a splendid result and passes the Tanto (-4.5%) as a result. The Nissan Roox (+44.1%) is the best performer in the Top 10 with the Mitsubishi Delica Mini/eK (+12%) also strong. The Mini lineup (-8.7%) stays atop the foreigners ranking, distancing the VW Golf (-33.1%) and T-Cross (-12.7%). The Mercedes G Class (-0.5%) advances to a fantastic 4th place ahead of the Mercedes GLB (+16.5%) and GLC (-19.8%). The Porsche 911 spectacularly breaks into the Top 20, landing directly at #9.
