Norway Full Year 2025: Record market (+39.5%), Tesla and Model Y at all time high

Boosted towards the end of the year by pulled forward sales linked to a VAT increase in January 2026, the Norwegian new car market is up 39.5% to 179,550 units in 2025. This is a new annual volume record, eclipsing the previous best of 176,276 in 2021. Norway is the world capital of BEV sales, holding 95.9% share vs. 88.9% over the Full Year 2024. This is thanks to sales up 50.3% to 172,233. They peaked at 98.3% in September. Meanwhile PHEVs drop -21.2% to 2,751 and 1.5% share, HEVs are off -66.4% to 2,306 and 1.3% share, diesel is at 1% share and petrol at 0.3%. Chinese carmakers hold 13.7% share vs. 10.4% in 2024.
Tesla (+41.3%) roughly matches the overall growth rate to remain the most popular carmaker in the country with 19.1% share. It hits the highest ever annual volume reached by a single brand at 34,285. Volkswagen (+71%) improves much faster and lifts its market share from 10.9% to 13.3%. Volvo (+26.2%), although weak in context, overtakes a struggling Toyota (-24.2%) handicapped by availability issues of its best-selling bZ4X. BMW (+45.5%) and Skoda (+43.1%) camp on their 2024 ranking at #5 and #6 respectively. BYD (+122.1%) and Ford (+100%) both lodge fantastic scores in the remainder of the Top 10 while below, Kia (+158.5%), XPeng (+127.6%) and Renault (+100.4%) stand out while Zeekr (+6013%) ends its first full year in market at #23.
Over in the models charts, the Tesla Model Y (+63.8%) is the best-seller for the 4th consecutive year, vastly outpacing the market to 15.4% share. It breaks the all-time annual volume record for any model in the country at 27,621, smashing its own previous record of 17,350 reached in 2022. The VW ID.4 (+21.9%) and Toyota bZ4X (+21.1%) are both up two spots to #2 and #3 respectively despite trailing the market, while the VW ID.7 (+236.5%) climbs 10 ranks to #4. #2 last year, the Tesla Model 3 (-9%) suffers and is down to #5. Excellent scores by the VW ID.3 (+53.3%) and Volvo EX40 (+291.7%). Just outside the Top 10, the BYD Sealion 7 (+2868.1%) and Ford Explorer (+253%) shine. The Skoda Elroq is the best-selling new launch at #13, followed by the MG S5 at #30 and the Mazda 6e at #37.
