238,263 new cars found a German buyer in July, a disappointing -2.1% year-on-year drop and -28.4% below the pre-pandemic levels of July 2019 (332,788). The year-to-date tally is up 4.3% to 1,709,904 and -21.6% below the first 7 months of 2019 (2,181,788). BEV sales are off a catastrophic -36.8% to 30,762 and 12.9% share vs. 20% in July 2023 and -20% year-to-date to 214,887 and 12.6% share vs. 16.4% over the same period last year.

Volkswagen (-4.3%) drops to a low 17.4% share vs. 19.3% so far this year, and is followed this month by Mercedes (+7.7%) at 9.7% vs. 8.8%. BMW (+12%) and Audi (-2.5%) also advance one spot on last month to #3 and #4 respectively, with Skoda (+37.4%) back down to #5 but up spectacularly year-on-year. Opel (-2.3%) ensures the Top 6 brands are in the same order as YTD. Toyota (+14.4%) is the only manufacturer in positive in the remainder of the Top 10 just as Ford (-17.8%) and Hyundai (-16.3%) struggle and Seat (-3.7%) limits its fall. Below, Volvo (+66.4%), Citroen (+50.2%) and Peugeot (+29.2%) stand out while Renault (-45.8%) and Mini (-42.4%) both implode.

Whereas it had benefited from a second wind in the past few months, the VW Golf (-25.1%) implodes anew with just 2.1% share this month vs. 3.8% year-to-date. The beneficiary is the VW T-Roc (+27%) repeating at #1. The Skoda Octavia (+32.9%) soars to 3rd place, securing a third ever podium finish after  July 2020 and January 2024. It distances the VW Tiguan (-14.2%) in difficulty. The Opel Corsa (-0.9%) is stable year-on-year and rallies back up six spots on June to #5 while the VW Passat (-10.1%) isn’t taking advantage of its new generation. The Opel Astra (+27.4%) continues to align strong months at #7. The Skoda Karoq (+105.9%) more than doubles its year-ago volume to break into the German Top 10 for the very first time at #8. For its part the BMW X1 signs its first Top 10 finish of the year after ranking #4 last December.
