According to data by PPK JSC, the Russian new passenger car market is up 69% year-on-year in 2023 to 1,058,708 sales but remains 36% below the 1,666,780 units of 2021. Local behemoth Lada (+88.9%) improves its market share from 27.9% to 30.6% at almost 325,000 units. 2023 is the year Chinese carmakers took control of Russian sales, with their market share estimated to be 47% of all passenger cars sold in the country at around 498,000 sales. After most Western manufacturers left the country in the aftermath of Ukraine’s invasion, the Chinese have filled the void in spectacular fashion as they place six brands in the Top 7. Chery (+203%) is the most popular at 11.2% share followed by Haval (+227.4%), Geely (+250.5%), Changan (+1773.1%), Exeed (+247.6%) and Omoda (+3288.5%). Kia (-49%), Hyundai (-54.4%) and Toyota (-18.5%) round out the Top 10. Notice also Jetour up to #10 in October, Tank up to #10 in November and Lixiang (aka Li) up to #10 in December. A resurrected Moskvich, rebadging JAC models, ranked #9 in November and December.

In the models ranking, the Lada Granta (+122.7%) scores its 7th ever win at home after 20132014, 2015, 20192020 and 2022, advancing to a record 18.5% share. The Haval Jolion (+218.4%) is up four spots to #2 while the Lada Niva Travel (+141.9%) is up one to #3. Having had its production interrupted this year, the Lada Vesta (+25.3%) drops two ranks to #4. The Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max lands directly in 5th place for its first appearance in an annual ranking. It distances the Lada Niva Legend (+142%) which sees its market share jump from 2.6% to 3.7% despite its old age. The Geely Coolray (+194%) is up to #7 just as the Omoda C5 (+2792.7%) and Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (+1469.9%) break into the Top 10 for their first full year of sales, having launched in late 2022. The Geely Monjaro (#10) is the second 2023 launch in the Top 10 at #10.
