Russia November 2023: First Top 10 finish for Moskvich and Tank

Moskvich 3

The Russian new car market is up 113% year-on-year in November to 109,706 units, however this is down -12.6% on November 2021. The year-to-date tally is up 64.9% to 939,254 but down -34.7% on the first 11 months of 2021. Note our source for Russian car sales has now changed to PPK JSC, which explains some inconsistencies with previous posts and data. Brands with previously unavailable monthly data such as Chery, Exeed, Jetour, Moskvich, Changan, Omoda and Geely are now available. GAZ and UAZ are not included in this ranking.

Lada (+54.7%) vastly trails the market in the brands ranking to fall to 29.8% share vs. 31.2% year-to-date. 7 of the following 9 manufacturers are Chinese. The Top 7 order is unchanged on last month, with Changan (+2347.8%) and Omoda (+2728.1%) faring best on low year-ago volumes. Haval (+222.4%), Geely (+214.9%) and Exeed (+154.6%) also beat the market while Chery (+109.9%) is a notch behind and stays #3 below Haval whereas it ranks #2 year-to-date. There are two newcomers in the Top 10: Moskvich at #9 and Tank at #10. The Soviet-era Moskvich brand was reborn in July 2022 after Renault sold its Moscow plant to the Moscow city government. The facility was then nationalised for production of vehicles under the Moskvich name. Although a Russian brand, all Moskvich models are rebadged JAC vehicles. The range includes four models: one sedan and 3 SUVs.

Model-wise, the Lada Granda (+26.7%) remains by far the most popular but posts the weakest year-on-year gain in the Top 10 and sees its market share drop to 14.8% vs. 19.2% so far this year. The Haval Jolion (+233.6%) reclaims the 2nd spot it holds year-to-date above the Lada Vesta (+328.5%). The Lada Niva Travel (+51.4%) and the venerable Niva Legend (+67.8%) complete the Top 5 but both lose share year-on-year. The rest of the Top 10 is entirely Chinese, with the new Chery Tiggo 7 Pro Max back up to #6, followed by the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (+415.9%). The Omoda C5 (+2095.9%) celebrates one year in market with the Geely Coolray (+123.2%) also beating the market and the new Geely Monjaro remaining in the Top 10 for the second consecutive month.
