Russia January-September 2023: Russians at 48.7% share, Chinese at 48.4%

The Tiggo 7 Pro helps Chery to 2nd place overall in Russia.

Sales of brands still opting to communicate monthly data total 64,429 units in August, a 38% year-on-year gain but -46.1% on two years ago (119,485 in September 2021). This is according to AEB, alternative figures from PPC JSC has the market up 120.5% to 116,324 but don’t provide brands or model detail. January-September figures, including Chery, Geely, Exeed, Omoda, Changan, Evolute, Mercedes, BMW, DFM and Mini, are up 26.1% year-on-year but dow -49.3% on two year ago to 638,678. According to PPC JSC, sales are up 42.8% to 761,148.

For the month, Lada (+75.5%) holds a mammoth 56.2% share ahead of Haval (+280.7%) up to a record 20.3%, GAZ (+41.4%) and UAZ (+59.4%). Newcomer Tank stays in 5th place and distances FAW (+361.8%), Sollers (new) and Kia (-72.5%) the only non-Chinese manufacturer to have stayed in the country. GAC (+476.3%) and Great Wall (+108.4%) complete the Top 10 with all other brands selling less than 50 units. 

Year-to-date, with the additional 10 manufacturers mentioned above, Russian brands climb 87.7% to 311,010 sales and 48.7% share while Chinese manufacturers shoot up 328.9% to 309,118 and 48.4% share. Lada (+96%) leads the way above Chery (+312.1%), Haval (+267.1%) and Geely (+302.3%). GAZ (+47.9%) rounds out the Top 5, distancing newcomer Omoda and Exeed (+228.6%). UAZ (+50.4%), Changan (+197.2%) and Kia (-83.5%) follow. FAW (+326.4%), Great Wall (+373.9%) and GAC (+305.8%) confirm the Chinese are on fire in Russia.

Over in the January-September models ranking, the Lada Granta (+176.7%) surges to 23.8% share above the valiant Lada Niva (+214.1%) at 9.8% of the market. The Chery Tiggo 7 Pro (+270.7%) ascends to the third step of the podium, dislodging the Haval Jolion (+244.3%) and GAZ Gazelle (+50.8%). The Geely Coolray (+338.9%) ranks 6th while the Omoda C5 lands directly at #7 above the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (+8050.6%). The Lada Vesta (-8.6%) and Chery Tiggo 8 Pro (+150.1%) close out the Top 10. Below, the Geely Atlas Pro (+225.7%), Haval F7 (+200.3%), Exeed LX (+461.9%) and Geely Tugella (+232.3%) make it 10 Chinese nameplates in the Top 14.
