Pakistan April 2023: Toyota topples Suzuki in devastated market (-80%)

The previous generation Toyota Corolla is still manufactured in Pakistan.

Data by local association PAMA shows new locally assembled light vehicle sales down a devastating -80% year-on-year in April to just 4,463 units. This leaves a year-to-date tally off -66.5% to 30,753. Non-availability of CKD parts due to Letter of Credit issues continues to heavily hamper production and sales in the country. Imports of goods into Pakistan generally require a Compulsory Letter of Credit. Note not all manufacturers present in Pakistan are members of PAMA such as Kia, Changan and MG notably and therefore don’t appear in these statistics.

The big event of the month is Toyota (-66.3%) overtaking Suzuki (-88.3%) to snap the title of best-selling brand in the country with 43.6% share vs. 33% for Suzuki. The latter however remain in the YTD lead at 34.3% of the market vs. 30%. Hyundai (-43.7%) also resists well in context to climb to 16.2% share vs. 12.9% so far this year whereas Honda (-92.1%) implodes to just 4.6% share vs. 17.5% year-to-date. Model-wise, the Suzuki Alto (-83.6%) keeps the lead despite a drastic fall, it distances four Toyotas: the Corolla (-75.5%), Hilux (-43.3%), Yaris (-75.6%) and Fortuner (-43.1%).

Previous month: Pakistan March 2023: Suzuki Alto back on top in market off -65.6%

One year ago: Pakistan April 20022: New generation Suzuki Swift lands directly in 2nd place, market up 29.8%
