Chile Full Year 2022: Mitsubishi L200 and Maxus T60 top record market, Chinese hold 32.9% share

Chilean new light vehicle sales step up 2.7% year-on-year in 2022 to 426,777 units, a new annual volume record eclipsing the past high mark of 417,038 in 2018. SUVs rise 8.7% to 189.473 sales and 44.4% share vs. 41.9% in 2021, passenger cars skid -13.3% to 105,186 and 24.6% share vs. 29.2% a year ago, pickups soar 19.3% to 87,558 and 20.5% share vs. 17.6% and vans edge down -4.3% to 44,560 units and 10.4% share vs. 11.2%.

Chevrolet (-3%) keeps the lead of the brands ranking but sees its market share thaw to 8.8% vs. 9.3% a year ago. Toyota (+40.6%) caps a fantastic year with the largest gain in the Top 10 and climbs up four spots on last year to #2 overall. Chery (+1%) is up two to #3, overtaking Hyundai (-15%) and Suzuki (-23%). Changan (+16.7%) and Peugeot (+16.5%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10 with Volkswagen (+2.6%) matching the market and MG (+1.3%) and Kia (-4.2%) more discreet. There are 23 Chinese carmakers present in Chile, and as a whole they gain 17.5% in 2022 to hold 32.9% of the market vs. 28.8% in 2021.

Model-wise, the Mitsubishi L200 (+38.9%) reclaims the top spot for the 5th time in the past 6 years at 2.9% share vs. 2.2% a year ago. However the Maxus T60 (+56.4%) is catching up, gaining six spots on 2021 to land at #2 overall. The T60 ranked #1 in April, May, August, October and December. The Toyota Hilux (+5.9%) is up two ranks to make the 2022 podium 100% pickups. Leaders last year, the Chery Tiggo 2 (-17.9%) and MG ZS (-17%) drop to #4 and #5 respectively. The Chevrolet Tracker soars to #6 with the Great Wall Poer (+80%), Toyota RAV4 (+28.8%) and Yaris (+28.7%) all showing great health.
