Chile July 2022: Mitsubishi L200 takes control of market edging up 0.2%

The Mitsubishi L200 is the best-selling vehicle in Chile in July and YTD.

The Chilean new light vehicle market edges up 0.2% year-on-year in July to 38,306 units. This is up 21.7% on pre-pandemic July 2019. The year-to-date tally is up a massive 20.1% to 260,759 which is also up 19.3% on the same period in 2019. Passenger cars (-26%) sink to 12,301 sales, tilting their YTD total into negative at -0.5% to 66,387 units, SUVs are up 8% to 15,859 for the month and up 29.3% to 89,788 year-to-date. Pickup trucks soar 29.2% year-on-year to 6,524 sales in July and an even more impressive 36.5% year-to-date to 36,494. Vans edge up 3.2% to 3,542 and gain 17.9% YTD to 24,413 units.

In the brands ranking, Toyota (+33.7%) takes the lead for the second time in the past three months with 9.4% share, toppling YTD #1 Chevrolet (+5.6%) down to #2 for the month. Mitsubishi (+70.7%) storms into the podium, up 10 spots on June to #3 and 6.4% share vs. 3.6% so far this year. Hyundai (-15.5%) stays in 4th place ahead of Chinese fares MG (+52.1%) and Changan (+37.1%) both in outstanding shape. Peugeot (+28.5%) and Volkswagen (+20.6%) also impress in the remainder of the Top 10. Below, notice Maxus (+100.7%), Mazda (+30.2%), Great Wall (+26.9%) and Ssangyong (+24.7%). Chinese carmakers as a whole are up 12.7% to 29.5% share vs. 33.7% YTD.

We now have sales available for 80 models vs. 40 previously. The Mitsubishi L200 (+104.7%) more than doubles its sales year-on-year to claim control of the market both for the month at a whopping 5.9% share and YTD at 3.1% share. The Chevrolet Tracker, #1 last month, is toppled to #2 at 3.7% of the market while the Maxus T60 rounds out the podium like in June and remains #2 year-to-date. The Toyota Hilux (-17%) and RAV4 (+25.8%) follow with very different fortunes. Notice also the MG ZS (+78.7%), Great Wall Poer (+315.4%) and VW Gol (+124%) all signing fantastic year-on-year lifts while the new MG ZX stays at #10.
