Mexico May 2022: MG up to #6, breaks all records, Nissan Versa back to #1, sales up 5.2%
The MG 5 breaks into the Mexican Top 10 for the first time in May.
91,215 new light vehicles hit Mexican roads in May, that’s a 5.2% year-on-year lift going against most international markets. The year-to-date tally is now stable at 428,058 sales. Nissan (-17.7%) goes against the market with a steep fall but holds onto the brands top spot at 15.5% share vs. 17.2% so far this year. Chevrolet (+0.1%) edges up but at 12.4% its market share is down on its YTD level of 14%. Toyota (+44.2%) sports a splendid year-on-year gain to stay in third place above Volkswagen (+8.2%) and Kia (+10.5%) both beating the market as well. The performance of the month without contest goes to MG (+315.1%), breaking ranking (#6), volume (4,350) and share records (4.8%) all at once. This is a fantastic start for the Chinese brand in Mexico. Fellow Chinese JAC (+213.7%), Dodge (+112.3%), Renault (+63.9%), GMC (+38%) and Suzuki (+26.5%) also impress further down.
Model-wise, the Nissan Versa (+3.1%) reclaims the top spot it held over the Full Year 2021 for the first time since last December. Leader for the first time last month, the Kia Rio (+35.6%) is knocked down to 2nd place but snaps the year-to-date top spot off the Chevrolet Aveo (-20.5%) in the process. The Nissan Pickup (-21%) completes the podium ahead of the VW Vento (+14.8%) up 7 spots on last month to #4. The Renault Kwid (+193.9%) and Toyota Hilux (+197.7%) both triple their sales year-on-year to #6 and #7 respectively. For the Kwid, this is the first Top 10 finish ever in Mexico. In fact the rest of the Top 10 all post euphoric year-on-year evolutions, with the Chevrolet Onix (+89%), MG 5 (+744.2%) and Toyota Avanza (+50.6%) in tow. This is also the first Top 10 finish for the MG 5. Just below, the Hyundai Tucson (+197.7%), Chevrolet Silverado/Cheyenne (+133.2%), VW Saveiro (+130.8%) and Toyota RAV4 (+107.8%) stun.
