Colombia May 2022: Renault back to #1, Toyota (+126.2%) impresses in euphoric market (+52.5%)

The Toyota 4Runner is up to #17 in Colombia in May.

New vehicle sales in Colombia leap up 52.5% year-on-year in May on a weak year-ago basis to 22,435 units. This means the year-to-date tally is now up 10.8% to 100,526 sales. After two months of leadership by Chevrolet (+25.1%), Renault (+35.6%) easily reclaims the top spot it holds year-to-date with 19.2% share vs. 14.6% for the American brand. Toyota (+126.2%) surges ahead in 3rd place at 11% share vs. 9.4% so far this year. Mazda (+53.4%) matches the market to stay at #4 while Kia (+151.7%), Foton (+131.9%), Suzuki (+70.2%) and Volkswagen (+65%) all outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Nissan (-8.6%) goes against the soaring market with a disappointing loss. Below, BYD (+1915.4%), Honda (+318.5%), Ssangyong (+233.3%), Mitsubishi (+205.7%), DFSK (+160%) and Mercedes (+155.3%) stand out.

Model-wise, the Chevrolet Joy repeats at #1 with 5.1% share, distancing the Mazda CX-30 like last month. The Renault Kwid is back up 8 spots on April to #3 thanks to its facelift. The Kia Picanto is up two to #4, the Renault Stepway up four to #5 and the Renault Sandero down two to #6. Renault places five nameplates inside the Top 10: add the Duster at #7 and Logan at #10. The Suzuki Vitara is up 16 ranks to #8 and the Chevrolet Tracker up 25 to #9. Notice also the Toyota Prado up 13 to #14, the Hyundai HB20S Accent up 38 to #15 and the Toyota 4Runner up 12 to #17. Among recent launches, the Toyota Yaris Cross climbs to #25 just as the BYD Song Plus (#63) and Yuan (#73) make their very first appearance in the Colombian Top 75.
