Sweden February 2022: Volvo XC60 tops market down -7.4%, rechargeable cars up to 51.6% share

The Volvo XC60 is the best-selling vehicle in Sweden in February.

New car sales in Sweden recede -7.4% year-on-year in February to 21,136 units, leading to a year-to-date tally down -5.5% to 41,029. In February, rechargeable cars hold 51.6% of the market vs. 34.8% a year ago and are up 48.2% year-on-year as a whole. BEVs shoot up 288.3% to 5,413 and 25.6% share vs. 6.1% a year ago whereas PHEV sales drop -16.2% to 5,495 and 26% share vs. 28.7% in February 2021. Once again Volvo (-22.9%) falls much faster than its home market but easily retains the lead at 18.8% share, distancing Kia (-1.6%) at 10.3% and Toyota (-6.6%) at 8.9%. Just below is Volkswagen (-34.9%) in difficulty and BMW (+22.1%) lodging the only year-on-year gain in the Top 5. Tesla (+473.9%) is up 25 spots to #10, scoring by far the largest gain in the Top 10, with Ford (+130.8%) and Skoda (+3.9%) also in positive. Below, Polestar (+185%) is up to a record #13, while Dacia (+172.2%), DS (+94.4%), Cupra (+90%) and Honda (+85.7%) also stand out.

Over in the models ranking, the Volvo XC60 (-3.5%) takes the lead for the first time since May 2021 with 5.3% share, toppling the Volvo XC40 (-23%) down to #2 but still #1 year-to-date. The Kia Niro (+55.8%) and Volvo S/V90 (+10%) go against the grain with sizeable growth with the Toyota RAV4 (-11.7%) rounding out the Top 5. Leader over the Full Year 2021, the Volvo S/V60 (-55%) is having a rough start of 2022, down to #6 for the month and #4 year-to-date. The Tesla Model Y reappears inside the Top 10 at #7 while the Toyota Corolla (+69.1%) and BMW 3 Series (+22.3%) shine to round out the Top 10. Just outside, the Polestar 2 (+188.7%) and VW ID.4 (+1565.4%) secure massive gains, the latter continuing to be Volkswagen’s best-seller in Sweden.
