New light vehicle sales in Mexico climb 6.8% year-on-year in 2021 to get back above the 1 million unit mark at 1,014,680 registrations. Nissan (+4.9%), while not being able to match the market, remains ultra dominant with 20.1% share. As it is also the case elsewhere in Latin America, Chevrolet (-16.3%) is hit full frontal by the semi-conductors shortage and crumbles from 15% share last year to just 11.7% now. Volkswagen (-1.3%) remains in third place ahead of Toyota (+19%) and Kia (+11.4%) both showing fantastic form and ensuring the Top 5 is identical to that of 2020. Mazda (+1.7%) overtakes Honda (-10.8%) for 6th place overall with Suzuki (+27.2%), Hyundai (+15.4%) and Ford (+9.7%) also posting very satisfying results in the remainder of the Top 10. Below, MG (+2203.9%) ends its first full year of sales at #15 and JAC (+103.1%), Mitsubishi (+71.1%), Fiat (+36.1%), Dodge (+34%), Seat (+33.4%), Jeep (+29.8%) and Peugeot (+17.8%) all shine.
Model-wise, the Nissan Versa (+2.6%) is the best-seller for the 6th year in a row, seeing its share thaw slightly from 7.2% to 6.9%. The Nissan Pickup (+7.4%) just edges past the market to remain in 2nd place with an unchanged 4.7% share. The Chevrolet Aveo (+19.5%) and Kia Rio (+21.5%) are both in great shape and gain two spots on 2020 to #3 and #4 respectively. The Nissan March (-8.9%) goes against the market with a significant loss and drops one rank to #5. The VW Vento (+9.8%), Nissan Sentra (+33.5%) and Toyota Hilux (+21.7%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, notice the Chevrolet Tracker (+60.2%), Seat Ibiza (+44%), Hyundai Grand i10 (+33.8%), Toyota Yaris (+32.7%), Nissan Kicks (+29.6%) and Kia Forte (+21.5%) all making themselves noticed with great upticks. The Chevrolet Captiva, aka Baojun 530, is the most successful 2021 launch at #21, it peaked at #9 in July. It distances the Chevrolet Groove, aka Baojun 510, at #82 and peaking at #11 in December.
