Sweden September 2021: Kia #1 for the first time, Tesla Model Y up to #2, electric cars hold 32.9% share
Tesla breaks its ranking, volume and share records in Sweden in September.
New car sales in Sweden drop -21.2% year-on-year in September to 22.634 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 14.7% to 232.383. Electric cars shoot up 103.2% year-on-year to 7.454, hitting a record 32.9% share vs. just 12.8% in September 2020 while PHEVs drop -23.5% to 4.751 and 21% share vs. 21.6% a year ago. All in all, rechargeable cars hold a record 53.9% of the Swedish new car market in September, the first time it crosses the symbolic 50% milestone. Year-to-date, BEV is up 129.4% to 16% share and PHEV up 48% to 26% of the market, with rechargeable cars accounting for 42% of the market.
We have a historical first in the brands ranking: Kia (+23.1%) brilliantly bucks the negative trend to hit the pole position for the first time with a strong 12.7% share vs. 9.6% so far this year. Kia is rewarded for its strength in the BEV and PHEV segments. Leader for the past 5 months in a row, Volkswagen (-29.2%) is toppled to 2nd place with 11.2% share vs. 12.9% year-to-date. Volvo (-54.7%) is up one spot on August to #3 but still suffers at 9.2% share vs. 16.1% so far in 2021. Tesla (+87.1%) shoots up 17 ranks on last month to land at #4 with 1.979 sales and 8.7% share, all new records smashing its previous best of #9, 1.359 sales and 4.9% in March 2020… Ford (+81.4%) also excels in the remainder of the Top 10 at #6 with 5.2% share, exactly double its YTD level. MG is back inside the Top 10 at #10.
Over in the models ranking, the Kia Niro (+37.4%) repeats at #1 and signs its third ever victory (add August 2020) with 5.4% share vs. 3.4% so far this year. Only 13 units below, the Tesla Model Y leaps up 37 spots on August to land at a sensational 2nd place overall with also 5.4% share. It dislodges the Kia Ceed (+49.3%) down one spot to #3. The Volvo S/V60 (-48.6%) is in great difficulty but climbs back up 7 ranks to #4, still holding the first place year-to-date. Justifying the record BEV volume for the month, the MG ZS is up to #5 overall, the Tesla Model 3 is up 63 spots to #6, the VW ID.4 ranks #7, the Skoda Enyaq is up 20 ranks to #14 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E is up to #16. Notice also the Lynk & Co 01 up 57 spots to #22, its first incursion into the Swedish Top 50.
