30/07 update: Now with Top 10 models.

Preliminary data by ACEA for Europe (EU+EFTA+UK) shows a market up 13.3% year-on-year to 1.282.503 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 27.1% to 6.486.351. However European sales remain markedly below pre-pandemic levels with June 2021 down -14% on June 2019 and the H1 2021 down a searing -23% on H1 2019. Among major markets, the UK (+28%), Germany (+24.5%) and Spain (+17.1%) perform best while Italy (+12.6%) is just below the European average growth and France (-14.7%) suffers from a high comparison base in June 2020 when incentives were implemented. Overall, Ireland (+174.8%), Iceland (+123.2%), Norway (+78.2%), Portugal (+71%), Greece (+68.2%), Croatia (+65.2%), Estonia (+63%) and Sweden (+45.9%) are the biggest gainers whereas Slovenia (-21.1%), Belgium (-16.3%) and Austria (-2.3%) skid down.

Low-emissions vehicles (BEV and PHEV) break their market share record at 18.5% vs. 8.2% a year ago, with 126.000  BEVs and 104.000 PHEVs finding a buyer this month. In the groups ranking and according to ACEA, the VW Group (+26.1%) almost doubles the market growth rate to cement its pole position, while Stellantis (+11.5%) trails the market slightly. Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi (-18.3%) is in trouble as it recovers from a particularly strong score a year ago. Hyundai-Kia (+51.7%) is the best performing main manufacturer, confirming the 4th spot it holds year-to-date, while the BMW Group (+18.6%) and Toyota Group (+30.5%) also outperform the market. In contrast, Daimler (-10.1%) and Ford Motor (-19.8%) go backwards due to microchip shortages.

The Tesla Model 3 is the 2nd best-selling vehicle in Europe in June.

Brand-wise, Volkswagen (+28.3%) manages a splendid year-on-year gain to easily top the charts with almost 153.000 sales, that’s almost double the result of #2 Renault (-23.7%) in dire straits but up five spots on May to #2. Toyota (+30.7%) remains in third place while Peugeot (-3.7%) drops two to #4. BMW (+20.5%) retains the premium crown for a mere 333 sales above Audi (+32%) also in outstanding shape. Hyundai (+56.8%) is the largest gainer in the Top 10 by far at #9, with Opel/Vauxhall (+26.5%) also outpacing the market at #10 overall. Below, Tesla (+212.1%) triples its sales year-on-year like last month to a new record volume, while Cupra (+1014%), Mazda (+49.5%), Kia (+41.5%), DS (+37%), Jeep (+34.4%), Suzuki (+28.1%), Seat (+25.4%), and Fiat (+20.3%) also impress.

Over in the models ranking, the VW Golf (+11.3%) repeats in the top spot but the hero of the month is the Tesla Model 3 (+259.8%) up a whopping 36 spots on May to land at a record 2nd place overall, only 1.550 sales below the Golf. The Model 3 ranks #1 in in the UK, Norway and Switzerland and breaks into the Top 10 in Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg and Sweden. The Dacia Sandero (+10%) rounds out the podium, equalling its record ranking of #3 also hit last January. Clear leader a year ago, the Renault Clio (-40%) hits the brakes and drops to #4 ahead of a very dynamic Fiat 500 (+63%). The VW T-Roc (+33.7%) and Opel Corsa (+23.7%) also outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas the Renault Captur (-9.5%) struggles and the VW Tiguan (+10.6%) and Toyota Yaris (+11.1%) are a little shy. The Peugeot 2008 (+8.9%) and 208 (-7.5%) are kicked out of the Top 10 while the Renault Arkana breaks into the Top 100 for the first time at #91.
