Brazil April 2021: Fiat places Strada and Mobi atop market down -25.9% on two years ago

The Fiat Strada is by far the best-selling vehicle in Brazil this month.

The Brazilian new light vehicle market bounces back up 219.2% year-on-year on lockdown year-ago volumes to 163.902 units, tilting the year-to-date tally into positive at +13.3% and 661.757 registrations. April 2021 however remains down -25.9% on the volume of two years ago in April 2019. All evolutions from now on are vs. April 2019. Fiat (+20.6%) cements its newfound domination and with 22.2% of the market reaches its highest share in over seven years: since March 2014 (23.5%). Volkswagen (-16.6%) resists better than the market in 2nd place whereas Chevrolet (-45%) implodes at #3, followed by Hyundai (-22.6%) and Toyota (-31.6%). Jeep (+13.5%) scores the only additional gain in the Top 10 with Nissan (-17.1%) resisting ok but Ford (-81.8%), Honda (-47.5%) and Renault (-42.9%) in dire straits. Just outside the Top 10, Chery (+76.7%) scores the highest ever share for a Chinese brand in Brazil at 1.6%, remaining at a record 11th place but its volume (2.560), although the highest for a Chinese brand in years, is not a new record: Chery itself hit 3.281 units almost 10 years ago in August 2011. Other gainers vs. two years ago in the Top 20 are Volvo (+15.7%), Land Rover (+2.4%) and Porsche (#20).

Chery hits an all-time record market share for a Chinese brand in Brazil.

Over in the models ranking, the Fiat Strada (+105.3%) sails off into the distance, selling almost double any other nameplate in the country and consolidating its year-to-date leadership. Fiat even manages to place three nameplates in the Top 4 with the Mobi (+64.2%) up to a record 2nd place, eclipsing its previous best of #5 hit just last month, and the Toro (+22%) up two spots on March to #4. In between, the Hyundai HB20 (-34.1%) straggles in third place while the Jeep Renegade (+16.1%) shines at #5. It’s a freefall (-67.4%) for the Chevrolet Onix down to a paltry 7th place. The other two gainers vs. two years ago in the Top 10 are the Hyundai Creta (+26.4%) and Jeep Compass (+11.6%), with the Chevrolet Tracker (+188.3%) and VW T-Cross (+132.7%) making themselves noticed further down. This month we welcome the new Toyota Corolla Cross directly at #29.
