Argentina April 2021: VW Amarok up to #2, outsells Toyota Hilux for first time in over 10 years

The VW Amarok ranks #2 overall in Argentina in April.

The new vehicle market in Argentina is up an extravagant 634.3% year-on-year in April to 32.200 units as April 2020 was a quarantine month. Sales are however down -13.6% on April 2019, a more meaningful comparison set. The year-to-date tally is now up 56.4% year-on-year to 148.370 but down  -15.6% on the same period two years ago. All comparisons from now on are vs. April 2019. Volkswagen (+11.8%) reclaims the brands top spot with a strong 19.2% share, passing Toyota (+25.1%) at 18.3% Fiat (+3.2%) also goes against the market decline in third place, distancing Chevrolet (-31.7%), Renault (-54.7%), Ford (-48.8%) and Peugeot (-31.4%) all in dire straits. At the bottom end of the Top 10, Mercedes (-4.1%) and Jeep (+7.1%) resist well.

Over in the models ranking, the Fiat Cronos (+175.2%) enjoys an 8th consecutive month in the lead but the main event is in 2nd place. For the first time since December 2010 and only the second time ever the VW Amarok (+116.3%) outsells its archenemy the Toyota Hilux (-13.7%) to become the best-selling pickup in the country. The Amarok also hits a record ranking this month. Toyota blames local production issues for the weak performance of the Hilux. The Chevrolet Cruze (+165.6%), Toyota Yaris (+72.5%), VW Gol (+62%) and Toyota Etios (+40.8%) also impress with fantastic gains in the remainder of the Top 10. The VW Nivus (#20) is the most popular recent launch above the Renault Alaskan (#34) and Ford Territory (#35).
