Indonesia August 2020: Nissan Livina (+573.5%) surprise leader in reeling market (-58.8%)

The Nissan Livina is the best-selling car in Indonesia in August.

The Indonesian new vehicle market is still reeling from the coronavirus crisis with August wholesales tumbling down -58.8% year-on-year to 37.291 units, leading to a year-to-date volume down -51.1% to 323.507. Retail sales fare slightly better at -57.8% to 37.655 for the month and -46.2% to 364.034 YTD. In the wholesales brands charts, Toyota (-70%) remains the best-seller but endures the steepest fall in the Top 5, leading to a weak 23.3% share vs. 30.2% so far this year. In contrast Nissan (+456.1%) is up 5-fold on August 2019, completely bucking the depressed trend to shoot up 9 spots on July to #2 with 18.3% share, and now #8 YTD with 2.9% of the market. Daihatsu (-56.9%) lifts two spots on last month to #3, overtaking Suzuki (-59.4%), Mitsubishi (-69.4%) and Honda (-74.4%). Mercedes (+64.3%), Peugeot (+60%) and Audi (+33.3%) are also up. In the retail charts, Toyota (-60.5%), Daihatsu (-54%) and Suzuki (-42.3%) dominate, with Mercedes (+160.6%) up and, Renault (-7.1%), Mini (-20%), BMW (-30.2%), Nissan (-31.7%) and Dongfeng (-40.1%) resisting best.

Over in the models ranking, the Nissan Livina (+573.5%) is up 7-fold on August 2019 and up 30 spots on last month to sign its first ever monthly win in Indonesia with a surreal 17% share, lifting to #14 and 2.4% in the year-to-date charts as a result. Nissan claims this wholesales figure was a response to strong demand by Nissan dealerships across the country, but given Nissan sold less than 1.000 retail units overall in August, it remains to be seen whether this mammoth Livina volume will be reflected in retail sales over the coming months. BSCB hasn’t found any specific promotions for the Livina in August in Indonesia, but given the manufacturer is currently launching the Kicks SUV in the country, this could correspond to a clearing of Livina factory inventory before the introduction of the Kicks. We’ll know more in September. Meanwhile the Toyota Kijang Innova (-41.8%) is up one spot on July to #2, the Toyota Rush (-65.1%) up 7 to #3, the Daihatsu Sigra (-51.1%) up 14 to #4 and the Honda Brio (-65.3%) down one to #5.
