Norway June 2020: Volvo XC40 up to record #4, MG ZS repeats in Top 10, Tesla down -85.1%, market off -25.5%

The MG ZS is once again among the 10 most popular vehicles in Norway.

21/07 update: Now with Top 40 All-brands and Top 202 All-models.

The Norwegian new car market drops -25.5% year-on-year in June to 11.443 units, its best hold since the start of the pandemic but only a marginal improvement on March (-32.2%), April (-34%) and May (-39%). The year-to-date tally now stands at 59.225 units, down -24.3% on the same period in 2019. Cementing its world leading green car status, Norway sees sales of electrified vehicles drop just -20.1% to see their share increase from 70.5% in June 2019 to 75.6% this month, although this is their lowest monthly share so far in 2020. In the detail, BEV is down -32.1% to 5.041 and 44% share vs. 48.4% a year ago, PHEV up 76.8% to 2.546 and 22.2% share vs. 9.4% and HEV down -45.7% to 1.065 and 9.3% share vs. 12.8%. H1 2020 figures are more blatant and see the electrified share shoot up from 68.1% to 78.3% year-on-year thanks to sales down just -12.9% to 46.362, including 28.503 BEV (-19%) for a 48.1% share vs. 45% in H1 2019, 12.069 PHEV (+37.5%) at 20.4% share vs. 11.2% and 5.790 HEV (-37.5%) at 9.8% vs. 11.8%.

In contrast, petrol and diesel each hold just 12.2% of Norwegian sales in June vs. 16% and 13.5% respectively in June 2019, 10.4% and 11.3% so far in 2020 and 16.9% and 15% over H1 2019. Private sales account for 46.9% of the Norwegian market in June vs. 54.2% in June 2019, 48.9% over H1 2020 and 49.6% over H1 2019. All wheel drive vehicles represent 42% of the market in June, a drastic fall from 56.3% in June 2019 and to be compared with 44.1% so far in 2020 and 50% in H1 2019.

In the brands ranking, Volvo (+93.9%) almost doubles its sales year-on-year to tease Volkswagen (-25.1%) for pole position at 11.1% share vs. 11.9%. Note Volvo hit a higher 11.2% share last December when it outsold Volkswagen but not Tesla and therefore ranked #2 also then. Toyota (-47.8%) is in a perilous position as non-rechargeable hybrids lose popularity in the country, but Mercedes (+54.4%), Hyundai (+38.3%) and Skoda (+37.5%) all score spectacular lifts in the remainder of the Top 6 just like Peugeot (+70.9%) climbing to #8. Tesla (-85.1%) and BMW (-43.6%) would rather forget about this month though. Below, Seat (+4600%), DS (+600%), Porsche (+596.8%), Suzuki (+52.4%) and Kia (+28.2%) stand out while newcomer MG drops one spot on May to #15 but breaks its share record to 2.8%.

Model-wise, the VW Golf (-24.4%) keeps the lead above the Hyundai Kona (+85.9%) up to a record 2nd place and eclipsing its previous best of #3 hit just last month, and the Tesla Model 3 (-82.5%) back on the podium despite being atomised year-on-year. The Volvo XC40 (+478.9%) is up 6-fold on its June 2019 volume thanks to the arrival of a PHEV variant and breaks into the Norwegian Top 10 and Top 5 for the first time at #4, its previous best being #18 hit both last December and March. The Skoda Octavia (+47.1%) is in splendid form and rounds out the Top 5 while the MG ZS improves further to a record #9, scoring a second consecutive month inside the Norwegian Top 10. The Mercedes EQC (+3042.9%), Peugeot 208 (+700%), Ford Kuga (+409.4%), Kia Soul (+341.9%), Peugeot 2008 (+278%), Volvo XC60 (+200%) and VW Up (+187.7%), are also on fire.
