Canada February 2020: Only 13 brands report in stable market, Toyota Motor (+13.9%), Mitsubishi (+15.1%), Subaru (+14.1%) stand out

Toyota sales surge 13.9% in February, the Highlander is up 34.7%

12/03 update: Now with brands actuals and official February sales for 115 models. Note previously published groups and brands data was incorrect.

After a relatively complete January, Canada follows the U.S. in killing monthly sales reporting, with only 10 brands out of 40 present in this market reporting February sales. Complete Q1 2020 official data will be available in early April. Local consultants DAC estimate the Canadian new light vehicle market at 123.375 units which is a 34 unit year-on-year uptick (DAC excludes Tesla) and leads to a year-to-date tally down -0.3% to 233.845. Light trucks are estimated to gain 6.3% to 96.500 and 78.2% share vs. 75.1% a year ago while passenger cars drop -10.8% to 26.875 and 21.8% share vs. 24.9% in February 2019.

Unlike the U.S., Canada isn’t a “good news only” market as group-wise, Toyota Motor (+13.9%) and Hyundai-Kia (+4%) are the only multi-brand groups in positive just as Nissan/Mitsubishi (-7.7%) and Honda Motor (-6.5%) face steep year-on-year drops. Brand-wise, Toyota (+13.9%) posts a fantastic surge as do Mitsubishi (+15.1%), Subaru (+14.1%), Lexus (+14%) and Mazda (+10.7%) albeit with significantly lower volumes. Infiniti (-30%), Genesis (-13%), Nissan (-10.5%) and Honda (-6.6%) aren’t that lucky. Model-wise, the Hyundai Ioniq (+279.4%), Nissan Leaf (+89.9%), Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (+83.4%), Kia Soul (+58.8%), Subaru Crosstrek (+57.2%), Toyota C-HR (+49.5%), Lexus RX (+46.4%), Honda Pilot (+43.9%), Toyota Tacoma (+43.5%), Acura RDX (+34.8%) and Toyota Highlander (+34.7%) are among the greatest gainers. The Mazda CX-30 (696), Hyundai Venue (532), Palisade (439) and Kia Telluride (308) are the most popular recent launches among models with official sales.
