Mexico September 2019: 27th market decline in past 28 months (-5.2%), JAC now reports sales

The Chevrolet Aveo is #1 in Mexico in September.

New light vehicle sales in Mexico drop for the 27th time in the past 28 months in September at -5.2% year-on-year to 100.747 units, leading to a year-to-date tally down -7.5% to 955.512. Once again brand leader Nissan (-24.5%) falls much faster than the market, enduring the steepest drop in the Top 13, but remains #1 at 19% share vs. 20.3% YTD. Chevrolet (-7.5%) and Volkswagen (-11.4%) round up a 100% negative podium while Toyota (+0.2%) and Renault (+2.3%) are the only Top 10 brands in positive just as Ford (-19.3%), Hyundai (-10.9%), Mazda (-9.3%) and Honda (-6.2%) lose share and Kia (-3.6%) improves to a record 7.7%, also hit last May. Suzuki (+11%), Seat (+9.6%) and Peugeot (+7.9%) also shine in the Top 20 but the most spectacular gain in market is posted by a newcomer in the charts, Chinese carmaker JAC (+69.1%) now releasing both 2018 and 2019 figures for us. JAC outsells BAIC (+4.8%) in the battle of Chinese brands, while Lamborghini (+33.3%), Cadillac (+24.3%), Volvo (+22.7%), Subaru (+17.8%) and Land Rover (+11.5%) impress further down.

Model-wise, the Chevrolet Aveo (-6.6%), Nissan Pickup (+14.1%) and Chevrolet Beat (+5.1%) all take advantage of a generation changeover slump by the YTD #1 Nissan Versa (-47.9%) and monopolise the podium. The Kia Rio (+27.9%) scores the largest gain in the Top 10 with the VW Jetta (+5.2%) and Honda CR-V (+1.4%) also up but the VW Vento (-35.2%), Kia Forte (-18%) and Nissan March (-15.7%) all freefalling. Further down, the Honda HR-V (+7288.2%), Toyota RAV4 (+133.3%), Ram 1500-3500 (+50.1%), Toyota Prius (+48.6%), Chevrolet Cavalier (+41.4%) and Hyundai Grand i10 (+27.2%) gallop ahead. The VW Virtus (#26) tops recent launches above the Renault Kwid (#34) and Suzuki Ertiga (#55).
