Portugal June 2019: Renault Captur breaks share record, threatens Clio for #1
The Renault Captur breaks its share record in Portugal this month.
New car sales in Portugal slide down -3.5% year-on-year in June to 25.305 units, leading to a First Half tally down -4.4% to 128.595. Renault (-4.3%) roughly follows the market to remain ultra-dominant at 16.9% share vs. 14.1% YTD, while Fiat (-0.5%) contains its loss to the minimum to gain two spots on May to #2, dislodging Peugeot (-11.6%) and Citroen (+4.3%). Mercedes (+14.2%) manages the largest gain in the Top 12 to remain at #12, with BMW (+12.8%), Toyota (+8.7%) and Seat (+5.8%) also in great shape but Opel (-26.1%), Volkswagen (-24.6%), Ford (-20.1%) and Nissan (-18.3%) all struggling. Below, Porsche (+690.9%), Mitsubishi (+64.7%), Hyundai (+34.2%), Mazda (+28.9%), DS (+25.8%) and Dacia (+20.1%) impress while Tesla shoots up 9 spots on May to #16 and 1.7% share, new records in Portugal eclipsing its #18 and 1.4% previous bests from last March.
Model-wise, the Renault Clio (-27.6%) crashes and burns as the 5th generations starts arriving in dealerships, only holding onto the top spot for a mere 11 sales above its crossover variant the Renault Captur (+56.1%) smashing its all-time share record at 5.7%. The Fiat Tipo (+74.8%) climbs onto its 2nd ever podium after July 2018, followed by the Mercedes A-Class (+92.5%) posting the largest uptick in the Top 10 below the Fiat 500 (+103.3%). The Toyota Corolla (+2921.4%) now with a hatch variant and the Renault Kadjar (+281.3%) stun, with the Tesla Model 3 (#27) topping all new launches ahead of the VW T-Cross (#56), Opel Grandland X (#59) and Citroen C5 Aircross (#62).
