The Hyundai Venue is now among the 10 best-selling vehicles in India.
The nightmare continues for new cars wholesales in India with June marking the third consecutive month of double-digit loss at -17.6% to 224.095 units. Brand leader Maruti (-17.2%) almost matches the market decline to reach 49.5% share, but it’s its two followers on the podium that deliver the best performances in market this month: Hyundai (-7.4%) manages to contain its fall to the single-digits to reach 18.7% share, a full two percentage points above its YTD level. Mahindra (+11.4%) is the only main manufacturer to manage a year-on-year gain this month, let alone a double-digit one, however its market share (7.9%) can’t quite match its YTD level (8.3%). In the remainder of the Top 10, Datsun (-60.7%), Honda (-41.4%), Ford (-36.8%), Tata (-26.7%), Toyota (-19%) and Renault (-18.6%) all fall faster than the market, with Volkswagen (-16.3%) only edging past.
Over in the models ranking, the Maruti Alto (+3.7%) scores the only gain in the Top 6 to reclaim the top spot off the Maruti Swift (-10.1%) while last year’s leader the Maruti Dzire (-39.2%) is in total perdition. The Maruti Baleno (-23.3%) and Wagon R (-9.6%) ensure the Top 5 is 100% Maruti (vs. Top 6 year-to-date). Below the Maruti Eeco (+65.1%) enjoying a second wind, the battle of the month is the one fought by the Maruti Vitara Brezza (-17.2%) and the new Hyundai Venue (+24.3% on May) for the title of #1 SUV in India. The Venue breaks into the Top 10 for the first time and for only its second month in market, ending the month just 108 wholesales below the Vitara Brezza and outselling the Hyundai Creta. The Maruti Ertiga (+75.5%) continues to shine even though it is knocked out of the Top 10 this month, and we welcome the Hyundai Kona in the Indian charts at #82.
