Netherlands April 2019: VW Polo #1, Kia Niro scores first podium

The Kia Niro scores its first podium finish in the Netherlands.

New car sales in the Netherlands drop -3.3% year-on-year in April to 33.149 units, leading to a year-to-date volume down -12.5% to 148.751. Brand leader Volkswagen (-7.3%) falls faster than the market but remains comfortably on top at 10.9% share, distancing Peugeot (-4.2%) also losing share year-on-year. BMW (+66.7%) is in exceptional form, leaping up 6 spots on March to #3, with Citroen (+24.6%) and Toyota (+14.4%) the other Top 10 carmaker posting double-digit gains. On the other hand, Renault (-39.4%) and Opel (-15.1%) get hit hard. Further down, Tesla (+528%), Seat (+31.7%), Hyundai (+26.4%), Jaguar (+25.3%), Volvo (+19.7%), Mini (+16.6%) and Mercedes (+11.7%) also manage outstanding upticks.

The Dutch models ranking has already recovered from the freak event that was the Tesla Model 3 pole position last month: the superstar EV is down 16 spots to #17 and 1.4% share, still a solid showing. The VW Polo (-13.4%) is up 5 ranks back to #1 for the first time since last November but the YTD leader remains the Ford focus (+37.8%) which ranks #2 this month like in March. The Kia Niro (+49.2%) climbs onto the Dutch podium for the first time ever, with the Hyundai Kona (+188.5%), Volvo XC40 (+144.6%) and BMW 3 Series (+119.8%), also posting cool scores in the Top 20 and the Toyota Corolla 2nd best-selling new launch below the Tesla Model 3 at #27.
