Austria April 2019: Skoda Octavia scores 2nd ever win, VW T-Cross in Top 15
The Skoda Octavia is the best-selling vehicle in Austria for only the 2nd time ever after February 2009.
New car sales in Austria edge up 0.4% year-on-year in April to 31.951 units, meaning the year-to-date tally is now down -7.8% to 112.806. Brand leader Volkswagen (-10.7%) posts the only double-digit drop in the Top 12 but easily remains the most popular carmaker at 15.5% share. Skoda (+11.4%) solidifies its 2nd spot and the VW Group monopolises the podium like last month with Seat (-5.4%) at #3. Peugeot (+41%) manages the largest gain in the Top 10 into which it breaks this month, with BMW (+25%) and Hyundai (+15.2%) also posting stellar scores. All other Top 10 carmakers bar Mercedes (+2.2%) are in negative.
Model-wise, the Skoda Octavia (+35.4%) surges ahead of the VW Golf (-14.6%) in a historical win: this is only the second time in Austrian history that the Octavia is the #1 model after February 2009. In fact it’s only the 4th time that the Golf isn’t #1 this decade alongside October 2012 (VW Tiguan), September 2018 (Hyundai Tucson) and December 2018 (VW Polo). The VW T-Roc (+7.1%) remains extremely solid in third place, distancing the Skoda Fabia (-6.8%) and VW Bus (-35.5%) in a Top 5 entirely composed of VW Group models. After starting its career with just 1 sale last month, the VW T-Cross leaps up directly to #15 with 1.2% share, the highest ranking it has reached so far in the world.
