USA Full Year 2018: Exclusive State by State rankings now available

The Toyota RAV4 wins 7 States in 2018 vs. just 5 in 2017.

For the fifth year in a row and thanks to our partnership with JATO Dynamics, we can share with you today separate rankings of the Top 5 best-selling vehicles for each U.S. State over the Full Year 2018. This data is exclusive to BSCB, you won’t find it anywhere else. Like in 2017, the methodology for this ranking is different the monthly U.S. data we publish, with pickup variants counted separately, which makes a lot of sense as they are basically different vehicles altogether. This way, the Ford F-Series is split into F-150, F-250 Super Duty, F-350 Super Duty and up, the Chevrolet Silverado into 1500, 2500HD and up, Ram 1500, 2500 and up, etc. Notable events this year include the Jeep Wrangler ending the Toyota Tacoma’s streak of 15 years at #1 in Hawaii, a podium 100% Toyota in Florida, the Ford Transit scoring its first ever State win (Arizona) and the first ever State Top 5 finish for the Tesla Model 3 (in California).

The Ford F-150 wins 31 States in 2018, same as in 2017 and 2016.

The market continues to steer clear of cars to launch with abandon into trucks: a truck is #1 in 49 States out of 51 vs. 47 in 2017, 45 in 2016, 43 in 2015 and 39 in 2014. Among these trucks, 32 wins go to pickups, 16 to crossovers and 1 to a van. In 2018, only two cars win a State (the Toyota Corolla and the Honda Civic) vs. 4 wins in 2017, 6 in 2016, 8 in 2015 and 12 in 2014! Assuming the USA national podium is Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Ram 1500, this is actually a pretty rare occurrence in the States ranking with only 9 States out of 51 reproducing this order. There is no State with no truck in its Top 5, two States with only pickups in their Top 5 (Oklahoma and Wyoming) and 7 States with no pickup in their Top 5 (California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island).

First ever State win for the Ford Transit in 2018.

Logically, for another year the runaway leader at the State winning game is  the Ford F-150, winning the same number of States as in 2016 and 2017 at a whopping 31 out of 51 States. The Toyota RAV4 is the 2nd-best placed, improving its 2017 score by two State to lift it to 7, but whereas last year no other nameplate managed to win more than 2 States, this year there are two: the Honda CR-V up from 2 to 4 wins and the Nissan Rogue up from 2 to 3. Reversely, all other winners only have 1 State to their scoreboard: the Chevrolet Equinox (Michigan), Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (Iowa), Ford Transit (Arizona), Honda Civic (California), Jeep Wrangler (Hawaii) and Toyota Corolla (Florida).

The Tesla Model 3 scores its first-ever State Top 5 finish in 2018.

Looking at Top 5 finishes, the Ford F-150 (42) comes up tops here also, ahead of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (32), Toyota RAV4 (31) and Ram 1500 (28), the latter being the vehicle with the most Top 5 finishes but no State win, the next ones being the Toyota Camry (12) and Subaru Outback (6). Up from no Top 5 finish in 2017 are the Jeep Cherokee (3), Subaru XV (2), Toyota Highlander (2), Chevrolet Cruze (1) and Tesla Model 3 (1). Finally, looking into the detail of the full-size heavy-duty pickup variants, whereas two heavy-duty pickup variants managed to rank #2 in one State last year, none does so in 2018. The Ford F-250 Super Duty manages the most Top 5 finishes (5): it ranks #3 in New Mexico and Oklahoma, #4 in Louisiana and Texas and #5 in Wyoming. The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is #3 in Utah and #5 in North Dakota, the Ram 2500 is #3 in Wyoming and the Ford F-350 Super Duty is #4 in Wyoming.
