Brazil September 2018: Volkswagen, Fiat, Jeep, Chery lift sales up 5.8%

New volume and share records for the Fiat Argo in Brazil this month.

The Brazilian new light vehicle market celebrates 17 consecutive months of year-on-year gains in September at +5.8% to 204.733 units, the best September score since 2014 (282.519), lifting the year-to-date tally up 13.1% to 1.779.675 sales, the highest 9-month YTD result since 2015 (1.881.671). Chevrolet (+3%) trails the market but is by far the most popular marque again at 17.8% share, followed by Volkswagen (+36%) and Fiat (+10%) both in excellent shape with Renault (-8%), Ford (-0.1%) and Hyundai (-1%) weaker further down. Jeep (+17%) and Toyota (+9%) also outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10, while among smaller brands Chery (+91%) is up two spots to #15, the highest ranking by a Chinese carmaker since October 2013, and Kia (+45%), BMW (+16%) and Volvo (#19) also shine.

VW Amarok sales are up 151% year-on-year in September.

Model-wise, the Chevrolet Onix enjoys a 38th consecutive month at #1 (no interruption since August 2015 which was the first time it ranked #1), also lodging its 2nd most dominant win ever at x2.07 the sales of the #2 ranked car the Ford Ka at 17.981 vs. 8.680. Its most dominant win so far was in January 2018 (x2.10). The VW Gol (+12%) posts a solid score that places it above the Polo YTD to return to the status of VW’s best-seller in Brazil. The Flat Argo soars 55% year-on-year to equal its ranking record at #6 (also hit last June) and break both volume and share records at 6.395 and 3.1% while the Jeep Compass (+20%) is back inside the Brazilian Top 10. Further down, notice the VW Amarok (+151%), Renault Oroch (+119%), Captur (+104%), Duster (+91%) and Chevrolet Tracker (+80%) making waves in the remainder of the Top 50. The Chery Tiggo 2 is up 4 spots to #56 and one of only 3 Chinese nameplates in the Top 100 alongside the Chery QQ (#89) and JAC T40 (#98).
