New vehicle sales in Malawi are up 1.3% year-on-year in 2017 to 1.765 registrations. Toyota remains ultra-dominant here, following the market at +1% to a mammoth 46.5% share. The brands podium remains unchanged on 2016 with Nissan up 21% to 16.8% in 2nd place and Ford up 1% to 10.2% in third position. The big news is Chinese manufacturer Foton storming into the ranking and landing directly in 4th place with a round 100 sales and 5.7% share. It knocks Tata (-25%) down to #5 while Kia (-2%) stays at #6. Volkswagen (-46%) and Mitsubishi (-81%) implode whereas Renault (+50%) breaks into the Top 10 at #9 thanks to the new Kwid and Kadjar (5 sales each).

Over in the models ranking, the Toyota Hilux is once again master in command with 20.8% of the market, stable year-on-year. The Nissan Hardbody surges 42% and two spots to take the 2nd rank, overtaking the Toyota Land Cruiser (-19%) and Ford Ranger (-3%) making it three pickups in the Top 4 like in 2016. Three newcomers in the Top 10: the Foton Tunland making its first appearance at an impressive 7th place, the Toyota Land Cruiser Pickup at #9 and the Nissan Patrol at #10.
