698 new vehicles were registered in Malawi over the First Half of 2015, and three brands hold a combined 78% market share: Toyota leads with 44.7% of the Malawian market above Ford at 18.1% and Nissan at 14.9%. Indian manufacturer Tata posts an excellent 4th place ahead of Kia, Hyundai, Chevrolet and Volkswagen. The Toyota Hilux remains the best-selling vehicle in Malawi but with 18.2% share it is now under threat from the Ford Ranger at 16.9%. Both models being about to transition to a new generation in the coming year, this battle will surely intensify. The Nissan Hardbody makes the podium 100% pickup with the Toyota Land Cruiser and Corolla rounding up the Top 5.

302 new light vehicles found a buyer in Malawi over the First Quarter of 2015, and the market is still overwhelmingly dominated by Toyota at 46% share above Ford (19.2%) and Nissan jumping to 16.6% share vs. 7.9% over FY2014. Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux leads the way with 20.9% of the market but the Ford Ranger is catching up at 18.9% vs. 15.9% in 2014 and the Nissan Patrol makes an appearance inside the Top 5 with 5.3% share.

For the second year in a row I can share with you official sales data for Malawi, a market down 8% year-on-year in 2014 to 1,558 registrations. Toyota tightens its stranglehold on the market, crossing the 50% market share mark at 50.7% despite sales down 4%, while Ford improves to 17.6% in 2nd place and Hyundai makes its entrance inside the Top 5. Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux is still master in command with 21.1% share, the Ford Ranger gains 2.7% market share in 2nd place, the Toyota Land Cruiser multiplies its sales by 2.5 at #3 and the Corolla jumps to #4.

Today I give you for the very first time official data for Malawi! 1,702 new light vehicles found a buyer in Malawi over the Full Year 2013, and Toyota literally owns the market with a huge 48.4% share, one of its highest score in the entire world – if not the highest, and in any case higher than at home in Japan (45.4%). Ford and Nissan follow while Tata makes a very interesting appearance inside the Top 5. Pick-up trucks rule in the models ranking with the Toyota Hilux ultra-dominant at almost 22% share ahead of the Ford Ranger and Nissan Pick-up.

Like many other African markets, Malawi is ‘owned’ by Toyota, which should place the Hilux and Corolla on top of the sales, and the Fortuner, Land Cruiser 70 and Hiace a bit lower. The Nissan Hardbody also seem quite successful.
