South Africa June 2017: Ranger holds onto slim lead over Hilux
The Ford Ranger is the best-selling vehicle in South Africa for the third month running.

New vehicle sales in South Africa edge up 0.9% year-on-year in June to 45.369 registrations, yet the year-to-date tally is down 1.3% halfway through the year at 269.006. The Top 4 manufacturers all beat the market, resulting in improved market shares: Toyota is up 10% to 23.2%, the Volkswagen Group is up 4% to 16.4%, Ford is up 1% to 11.8% and Nissan up 24% to 9%. Reversely, Hyundai-Kia is down 1%, General Motors/Isuzu down 20% and Mercedes down 11%. Other great performers include Renault up 14%, Mazda up 24%, Suzuki up 12%, Mahindra up 24% and Great Wall up 122%. Model-wise, the Ford Ranger signs a third consecutive month in pole position with a 172-unit advantage over the Toyota Hilux, lifting its year-to-date lead to 187, still incredibly tight. The VW Polo Vivo (+6%) remains in third place above the VW Polo (-5%), Toyota Corolla (+9%) and Quantum (+29%), replicating the YTD order. Also to be noticed, the Nissan NP300 Hardbody surges 70% to #10 and the Renault Kwid is down one spot to a still excellent 13th place (the French brand’s best-seller). Among recent launches, the Toyota C-HR is down 7 spots to #57, the Suzuki Ignis up 35 to #64 and the Datsun GO+ down 24 to #67.
