The Indonesian new car market is up a flamboyant 21% year-on-year in August to 96.294 wholesales, lifting the year-to-date tally up 3% to 690.808 units. Lightning strikes the Indonesian new models ranking in August: for the first time since 2006, the Toyota Avanza gives up its best-selling nameplate title. As we forecast last month, this honour goes to the Toyota Calya, ending a full decade of Avanza domination thanks to 9.241 sales vs. 9.123 for the former #1, down 44% year-on-year. The Calya is priced between IDR 130-150 million (US$9.800-11.400) with the cheapest Avanza 1.3-litre manual starting at IDR 183 million (US$13.900). The Calya’s twin sister, the Daihatsu Sigra is for its part priced at IDR 106-149 million ($8.000-11.300) and gains 7 spots on July to land at #4 with 5.734 deliveries.

The Kijang Innova (+25%) and Sienta – up 64% on its inaugural month in July – make it five Toyota Group MPVs inside the Indonesian August Top 6. While the Daihatsu Xenia is down 39%, non-Toyota MPVs particularly suffering from the arrival of the Calya and Sigra this month are the Suzuki Ertiga (-37%), Honda Mobilio (-52%) and Honda BR-V, outside the Top 20 for the 2nd month running. Apart from the latter two nameplates, Honda shines, placing the Brio Satya at #3 – up 226% on a year ago – the HR-V at #7 (+94%), the Jazz at #16 and the Brio RS at #19, the nameplate’s first appearance inside the Indonesian Top 20.
