The South African new car market is off to a struggling start in 2016 with sales down 7% in January to 48.615 registrations and down 8% in February to 48.149, pulling the year-to-date total down 8% year-to-date after two months at 96.708 units. Toyota holds 22.4% of the market in January above Volkswagen Group (17.9%) and Ford SA (13.4%) while Hyundai-Kia (-23%), Nissan (-19%) and GM/Isuzu (-21%) all drop heavily. Mazda agains 80%. In February, Toyota is at 18.2% share, Volkswagen Group at 15.8% and Ford at 13.9% with Hyundai-Kia (-15%) and GM/Isuzu (-15%) still in difficulty while Mazda improves further at +87%.
Model-wise, the start of 2016 coincides with the launch of the new generation Toyota Hilux, market leader in South Africa since 2013. Launched in February, the new gen hasn’t showed its impact on sales yet with the Hilux ranking #2 in January (+6%) but #3 in February (-27%) for a third place so far in 2016. The VW Polo Vivo takes the lead in January with an excellent 6.8% market share thanks to sales up 10% while the Ford Ranger takes the relay in February despite volumes down 10% to 5.8% share. All-in-all, the Polo Vivo remains in the lead for now in 2016 (5.970) above the Ranger (5.118) and Hilux (5.033). Other great performers include the Ford Fiesta up to #8 in January, the Chevrolet Spark up to #9, Toyota RAV4 up to #15, Renault Clio IV up to #17 and Toyota Avanza up to #19 all in that month, but all are falling back down to their usual level in February.
