The Belgian new car market is up by a shy 2% year-on-year in March to 63.043 registrations, lifting the year-to-date total to 169.155 units over the first quarter, a 3% improvement over the same period last year. After losing its throne last year to the Renault Scenic and Clio, the VW Golf reclaims the Belgian pole position thanks to 1.604 sales in March and 3.363 year-to-date, yet only holding a 2% market share which makes Belgium the most fragmented market in the world, topping Switzerland for the fist time. We have a big surprise in 2nd place: the Hyundai Tucson is an instant blockbuster here with 1.193 deliveries for the month and 3.115 so far in 2016, earning it a stunning third spot overall, below just the Golf and Renault Clio. Other great performers in March include the Ford Fiesta (#6), Audi A4 (#7), VW Tiguan (#8), Mercedes CLA (#22) and BMW X1 (#37). Leader in 2015, the Renault Scénic is down to a paltry #12 in March and #9 year-to-date.
