A 9% year-on-year increase in November to 272.377 units is a breath of fresh air for German new car sales, with the country’s largest carmaker still embroiled in a seemingly never-ending cheating scandal. The year-to-date total now stands at 2.958.687 units, up 5% or 152.000 on the same period last year. Although in decline compared to November 2014, Volkswagen limits the damage to -2% and holds 21.3% of its home market, almost exactly its year-to-date level (21.5%). German consumers are indeed still supporting their national carmaker in the face of adversity. Porsche is stable, Audi is up 3% and Skoda up 13%, only Seat also loses ground at -3%. All-in-all the VAG Group is putting on a brave face at home. Mercedes brilliantly outpaces the market in 2nd place overall (+14%), now flirting with the symbolic 10% market share, while Ford (+23%) remains above Opel (+12%). Further down, Renault (+20%), Kia, Toyota (+24%), Mazda (+32%), Mitsubishi (+46%) and Smart (+68%) impress.
Model-wise, Volkswagen keeps the podium 100% to itself with the Golf (-13%), Passat (+52%) and Polo (-11%) while its parent company monopolises the Top 5, adding the Audi A3 at #4 (+12%) and the Skoda Octavia at #5 (+38%). The Mercedes C-Class drops 23% to #6, the Opel Astra is already starting to feel the benefits of the new generation, up 58% to #7 and the Skoda Fabia hits its best ranking since March 2011 at #8 (+42%). Further down, the BMW 2 Series jumps 140% to #19, the Hyundai i30 shoots up 164% to #20 and best-selling “true” foreigner (ex-VAG Group), the Toyota Yaris is up 49% to #25, the Mercedes GLC shoots up 18 spots on October and 145% on the GLK a year ago to #29, the Renault Clio is up 43% to #34, the Mercedes CLA up 112% to #37 and the Ford Mondeo up 6-fold to #47. Just outside the Top 50, the Mercedes GLE gains 11 ranks to #51 and the Renault Kadjar is up 8 to #52.
