Traditionally the slowest month of the year by far, August sees the Italian new car market uo 10.5% year-on-year to a still minuscule 59.556 registrations. The year-to-date total now stands at 1.069.939 units, up 15% or 140.000 deliveries on the same period last year. Brand-wise, Fiat (+4%) and Volkswagen (+5%) gain less ground than the market as opposed to Ford (+22%), Opel (+27%) and Peugeot (+13%). Renault is down 11% to 5th place above Lancia (+12%) and Toyota (+27%). Other great gainers include Citroen (+17%), BMW (+18%), Alfa Romeo (+37%), Jeep (+216%) and Smart (+123%).

Alfa Romeo MiTo Italy July 2015Freak month for the Alfa Romeo MiTo: up 159% to #18.

The models ranking is surprisingly stable with the Fiat Panda (-7%), Punto (-4%) and Lancia Ypsilon (+18%) on top. The VW Golf (+5%) outpaces the Ford Fiesta (+13%) and Renault Clio (-17%) to claim the title of best-selling foreigner while the Fiat 500L (#5) and 500 (#9) are still below their year-to-date levels. Notice the Peugeot 208 (+39%), Opel Corsa (+38%), Toyota Yaris (+63%) and Citroen C3 (+50%) lodging impressive year-on-year gains, the Opel Mokka very solid at #14 and the Fiat 500X dropping 8 spots on June to #15, only 155 units above its platform twin the Jeep Renegade at #17.

The Alfa Romeo Mi.To surges 159% on July 2014 and 33 spots on July to land at a cool #18, the Ford Ka doubles its sales year-on-year to #34 and the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer takes off 14 ranks to a record #35 with 466 sales, becoming BMW’s best-seller in Italy and now outselling its archenemy the Mercedes B-Class year-to-date at 5.826 units vs. 5.642. Among recent launches, the Opel Karl brilliantly breaks into the Italian Top 50 for its third month on sale in the country, up 20 spots on July to #45 and the Suzuki Vitara misses out on doing exactly that for a mere 11 units at #51.
