Thanks to SMMT we have access to the Top 10 best-sellers for each UK nation for May, as a teaser for overall UK results due very shortly. Overall, if UK new car sales are up 2% in May, it’s actually England (+4%) thats is keeping everyone above water level, as Northern Ireland (-3%), Wales (-5%) and above all Scotland (-8%) are in clear negative territory, a sign that the record uninterrupted run of 39 months of year-on-year UK gains may be coming to an end soon. The Ford Fiesta topped all nations in April but only two this month: England (4.6%) and Wales (9.5%) while the VW Golf is #1 in Northern Ireland (3.9%) and the Vauxhall Corsa reclaims the Scottish lead (5.3%). The Ford Focus is the only other nameplate to manage a podium ranking at #2 in England and Wales and the Vauxhall Mokka posts a brilliant 4th spot in Scotland and Wales.
Among irregular Top tenners, let’s single out the Seat Ibiza knocking two birds with one stone in May: up to a splendid 6th place in Scotland with 2.6% share and 7th in Wales at 2.1% of the market. The Dacia Sandero is fast establishing itself as a blockbuster in the UK: it earns its first year-to-date Top 10 ranking in Scotland (#10) where its dislodges the Audi A3 thanks to May at #7 and 2.2%. The Hyundai i10 spends a 2nd consecutive month among the Top 10 best-sellers in Northern Ireland at #8 and the Mini doesn’t just owe its #6 overall UK spot to a strong performance in England (#6): it also reappears at #10 both in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
