Samoa, formerly known as Western Samoa, became independent from New Zealand in 1962. It composes the western part of the Samoan Islands, the Eastern part being American Samoa. According to Wikipedia, the two main islands of Samoa are Upolu where the capital city Apia and the Faleolo International Airport are located, and Savai’i, one of the biggest islands in Polynesia. The Samoan Islands were was called “Navigator Islands” by European explorers before the 20th century because of the Samoans’ seafaring skills. Toyota dominates the Samoan market with an iron first and over 50% share, above Ford (25.9%) and Hyundai (19.1%). The Hilux is the best-selling nameplate in the archipelago followed closely by the Hiace. Ford is currently running a marketing campaign in Samoa offering 500 tala (US$200) if customers test drive a Ford Ranger and still decide to go with the ‘other guy’ (namely the Toyota Hilux).
