Nothing is stopping the Canadian new light vehicle market’s progression: up another 3% both in February at 109,248 registrations and year-to-date at 208,299 deliveries. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles maintains a solid grip on the groups ranking with 18,711 sales and 17.1% share, adding up to 36,765 units year-to-date, a comfortable margin over 2014 leader Ford Motor Co. at 15,021 in February and 29,603 year-to-date. In the brands ranking, Ford holds the top spot with 13.3% share despite sales down 9%, followed by Toyota up 20% to 10.7% and Hyundai up 3% to 7.6%. Nissan is up 20%, GMC up 32%, Volkswagen up 26% in a total fortune reversal compared its struggling sales in the US, Mercedes up 16%, Chrysler up 44%, Mini up 97% and Lincoln up 138%.
The Ford F-Series is up a timid 1% year-on-year to keep the lead of the models ranking with 7,947 ahead of the Ram Pickup (5,735) and Dodge Grand Caravan (3,162). The GMC Sierra is on fire: up 21% year-on-year to reach the 4th spot overall both this month and year-to-date vs. #8 in 2014, but is outperformed by its mass-market twin the Chevrolet Silverado, growing at twice the rate at +42% to #5. The Toyota Corolla is the best-selling passenger car at #6 and only one of two in the Top 10 with the Honda Civic (#7). Talk about a market dominated by light trucks! (Note the definition of light trucks in North America include pickups, SUVs and MPVs).
Further down, notice the Hyundai Sonata boosted up 123% to #16 by the new model, the VW Golf up 9-fold year-on-year (!) to #20, the Toyota Camry up 81% to #22, Hyundai Tucson up 61% to #22, Chrysler Town & Country up 84% to #25, Toyota Sienna up 95% to #28, Jeep Patriot up 88% to #36, Mercedes C-Class up 99% to #37 and the Honda Fit up 86% to #38. Finally, the Nissan Micra confirms its title of most successful new nameplate launch over the past 12 month by ranking #34 in February and #33 year-to-date.
